May I tint the windows on my car, and which ones?
Conditionally yes: you may tint, but at the front only up to the statutory limit of light transmission. Under the Rules on tinting vehicle windows, the windscreen together with any film must transmit at least 75% of light, and the front side windows (at the driver and front passenger, ahead of the B-pillar) at least 70%. At the rear the rule is far more relaxed: the rear side windows and the rear window may be tinted even heavily if the vehicle has exterior mirrors on both sides. The widespread myth »I can tint the front as long as I can still see out« is false — at the front it is the measured transmission (75% or 70%) that counts, not the driver's feeling. Mirror (reflective) films are prohibited on all windows. After a film is applied a type approval or conformity confirmation must be obtained, otherwise the tint is non-compliant. The practical consequence: an over-tinted front means the vehicle fails the roadworthiness test, and a police officer can order the defect removed. Factory-tinted rear windows (privacy glass) are already approved and allowed.
📋 The rules
- The windscreen together with any film must transmit at least 75% of light, and the front side windows (driver and front passenger) at least 70% (Rules on tinting vehicle windows).
- The rear side windows and the rear window may be tinted more heavily or fully if the vehicle has exterior mirrors on both sides.
- Mirror (reflective) films are prohibited on all windows of the vehicle, regardless of the degree of light transmission.
- After a later tint a type approval or conformity confirmation must be obtained; without it the tint is non-compliant and the vehicle does not meet the rules.
- At the front it is the measured light transmission (75% or 70%) that counts, not the driver's subjective judgement; factory-tinted (privacy) rear windows are already approved.
🔓 Exceptions
- If the rear windows are tinted so that they transmit less than 30% of light, the vehicle must have exterior mirrors on both sides — that is the condition for heavy tint at the rear.
- Medical exceptions (e.g. severe light sensitivity) are possible only if the rules and type approval specifically allow them; unilateral extra tint at the front is not automatically permitted even with a doctor's note.
- Vehicles with factory-fitted tinted rear windows are already compliant and need no further approval; that is required only when films are applied later.
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Over-tinted front windows mean a technically unfit vehicle: at the roadworthiness test the vehicle fails, and on the road a police officer can order the defect removed and fine a vehicle that does not meet the prescribed conditions. Slovenia has no published single fine for the tint itself — the sanction is imposed within the rules on vehicle roadworthiness, so we state this cautiously here and do not invent it. The costs add up: removing the film, a re-test and a new type approval, and on refused registration also the inability to use the vehicle until it is compliant. Mirror films are prohibited everywhere. An overlooked trap is insurance: in a crash where poor visibility from unlawful tint contributed to the collision, the insurer may assert partial liability of the driver. At the rear there is little risk; at the front, too-dark film almost always ends badly.

❓ Frequently asked
Which windows may I tint on my car?
You may tint the rear side windows and the rear window even heavily if the vehicle has exterior mirrors on both sides. The windscreen and the front side windows, however, must stay clear, since they must transmit at least 75 and 70 percent of light respectively.
How much light transmission is allowed at the front?
The windscreen together with the film must transmit at least 75 percent of light, and the front side windows at the driver and front passenger at least 70 percent. The measured transmission is decisive, not the driver's feeling, so darker front film is not allowed even if you can still see through it.
Do I need a type approval for the tint?
Yes, after films are applied later a type approval or conformity confirmation must be obtained, confirming that the tint meets the rules. Factory-tinted rear windows are already approved, and additional confirmation is required only for films applied afterwards.
Are mirror films allowed?
No, mirror or reflective films are prohibited on vehicles on all windows, regardless of how much light they transmit. If you want protection from sun and prying eyes, you may use ordinary dark film at the rear within the rules, but at the front only up to the prescribed transmission.
What do I risk with over-tinted front windows?
A vehicle with unlawful tint at the front fails the roadworthiness test and cannot be registered, and on the road a police officer can order the defect removed and impose a fine. In a crash caused by poor visibility, the insurer may also assert partial liability of the driver.
