Can I get the Working Family Payment in Ireland?
Yes if you're an employee with a child, working at least 38 hours a fortnight, and under the income limit for your family size. The Working Family Payment (WFP) is a weekly tax-free top-up worth 60% of the gap between your average weekly family income and the limit. The 2026 income limits start at €765 (1 child), €866 (2), €967 (3) and rise from there. You must work at least 38 hours per fortnight (hours can be combined with a spouse or partner), your job must be likely to last 3 months, and you must pay tax and PRSI in Ireland. The minimum payment is €20 a week, and once awarded the rate is fixed for 52 weeks even if your income changes. It's not means-tested on savings or your home. In short: yes, within the income limits, locked in for a year.
📋 The rules
- For employees with at least one child
- Work at least 38 hours a fortnight (can combine with partner)
- Pays 60% of the gap to the income limit
- 2026 limit starts at €765 (1 child)
- Rate is fixed for 52 weeks once awarded
🔓 Exceptions
- Not available if you're only self-employed or on Jobseeker's/CE schemes
- From Jan 2026, WFP recipients auto-satisfy the Fuel Allowance means test
- A child counts to 18, or 18–22 in full-time education
⚠️ Penalties & fines
WFP is not means-tested on capital — your savings, home and car are ignored; only assessable income counts. The minimum payment is €20 a week, and the rate is locked for the full 52-week award. Renewals must be made within 4 weeks of expiry to keep the claim running continuously. You can earn up to €14,000 a year from renting a room without it affecting WFP. From 1 January 2026, WFP recipients are automatically deemed to satisfy the Fuel Allowance means test. Beware a myth: "if you get a pay rise your WFP is cut immediately" is false — your WFP rate is locked for the full 52 weeks and does not drop if your earnings rise during that period. To claim: apply to the Department of Social Protection with proof of income and hours.

❓ Frequently asked
What is the Working Family Payment?
The Working Family Payment is a weekly, tax-free top-up for employees on lower pay who have at least one qualifying child. It pays 60% of the difference between your average weekly family income and the income limit for your family size, with a minimum payment of €20 a week. It's designed to support working families.
Do I qualify for WFP?
You must be an employee — not solely self-employed — with at least one qualifying child, working a minimum of 38 hours per fortnight, which can be combined with a spouse or partner's hours. Your job should be likely to last at least three months, your income must be under the limit for your family size, and you must pay tax and PRSI in Ireland.
What are the income limits?
The 2026 weekly income limits start at €765 for one child, €866 for two, €967 for three, and rise from there with each additional child. If your average weekly family income is below the limit for your family size, you can get 60% of the difference as your Working Family Payment.
Will my payment drop if I earn more?
No, not during your current award. Once your Working Family Payment is granted, the rate is fixed for 52 weeks and won't be reduced even if your earnings rise during that period. This gives families certainty. Your income is only reassessed when you renew the payment at the end of the 52 weeks.
Does WFP affect other payments?
WFP is not means-tested on savings, your home or car. From January 2026, WFP recipients automatically satisfy the Fuel Allowance means test, so they don't need a separate application. However, you generally can't get WFP at the same time as Jobseeker's payments, Community Employment, or certain other schemes.
