Can I fill an e-prescription at any pharmacy?
Yes: you can fill an e-prescription at any pharmacy in the country. Prescriptions are now issued electronically. After a visit (also a teleconsultation) you get a 4-digit code — by SMS, email or on an information printout. To collect the medicines, at the pharmacy you give this code and your PESEL number (or show the e-prescription in an app). You can do it at any pharmacy, and if the prescription has several medicines — collect them partly, at different pharmacies. An e-prescription is as a rule valid 30 days from the issue date (or another stated), with exceptions: antibiotics usually 7 days, and some prescriptions (e.g. "annual") longer. All e-prescriptions and e-referrals are in the Patient's Internet Account (IKP). Across the EU there's also a cross-border prescription.
📋 The rules
- Prescriptions issued electronically; code by SMS/email/printout
- Filled at any pharmacy with the code and PESEL
- Medicines can be collected partly at different pharmacies
- Validity as a rule 30 days (antibiotics 7 days)
- E-prescriptions visible in the IKP
🔓 Exceptions
- Antibiotics: shorter validity (usually 7 days)
- Annual prescription: filled in batches over a longer period
- Cross-border prescription: filled at pharmacies in other EU countries
⚠️ Penalties & fines
An e-prescription is convenient and secure, but mind the deadlines: after the validity expires you can't fill it and will need a new one. Protect the code and your data — sharing them with a stranger lets them collect your medicines. With reimbursement the medicine is dispensed at the relevant co-payment, and for the entitled (e.g. seniors 65+, children under 18) with the "S" or "DZ" code — free, provided the medicine is on the right list. To use e-prescriptions smoothly: log in to the IKP (you'll see prescriptions, dosage and validity), fill prescriptions on time, carry the code and PESEL, and collect annual-prescription medicines in batches as the doctor advised. For dosage doubts, ask a pharmacist.
