Can I use the mDowód instead of my ID card?
Yes, in most situations — but not everywhere. Under the Act on the mObywatel app, the mDowód identity document is legally equal to the traditional ID card, so you can use it to prove your identity in almost all formal situations — officials and institutions must respect it. It is not, however, a digital copy of the plastic card: it has its own series and number and different dates. The mDowód is generated from the app but works only if you hold a valid ID card with an electronic layer (e-dowód). There are exceptions: you can't apply for a new ID with it and can't cross a border (it doesn't replace a travel document). Some entities (e.g. banks, a notary) may in certain situations ask for the traditional document. Otherwise the mDowód is a full identity document.
📋 The rules
- mDowód legally equal to the ID card
- Proves identity in almost all formal situations
- It's not a copy of the ID — has its own series and number
- Works if you hold a valid ID (e-dowód)
- Exceptions: applying for a new ID, crossing a border
🔓 Exceptions
- Applying for a new ID card: the existing document is required
- Crossing a border: the mDowód doesn't replace a travel document
- Some entities may ask for a traditional ID in special situations
⚠️ Penalties & fines
The mDowód is safe and accepted, but it's worth knowing its limits: refusing to recognise it where it's valid is the institution's responsibility, not the citizen's — you can file a complaint. Conversely, trying to use the mDowód where it doesn't work (a border, getting a first ID) will simply fail and you'll need the traditional document. Don't share the app with others and protect access to your phone, as mObywatel holds your data. To use the mDowód: download the mObywatel app, activate it (easiest with an e-dowód or trusted profile), and when proving identity show the document in the app — then you needn't carry the plastic ID.

❓ Frequently asked
Does the mDowód replace the ID card?
Yes, it's legally equal to the traditional ID card and you can use it to prove identity in almost all formal situations. It's not a digital copy of the plastic ID, though — it has its own series and number and different issue and validity dates. It works if you hold a valid ID.
Where can't I use the mDowód?
Mainly when applying for a new ID card and when crossing a border — the mDowód doesn't replace a travel document. In some situations specific entities, e.g. banks or a notary, may ask for the traditional document. Otherwise it's a full identity document.
Must I still carry the plastic ID?
As a rule no. Since the mDowód is equal to the ID card, showing the document in the mObywatel app is enough to prove identity. It's worth having the traditional ID, though, for situations where the mDowód doesn't work, e.g. travel abroad requiring a travel document.
How do I activate the mDowód?
Download the mObywatel app and activate it — easiest with an e-dowód (an ID with an electronic layer) and an NFC phone, or via a trusted profile. After activation the mDowód appears in the app. The condition for use is holding a valid ID card.
Must an official accept the mDowód?
Yes. Since the document is legally equal to the ID card, officials and institutions must as a rule respect the mDowód and be able to confirm the identity of the person using it. The exception is situations where the mDowód, by law, doesn't apply.
