Can I ride an e-scooter in Austria?
Yes — but much more strictly regulated since 1 May 2026. Under the 36th amendment to the Road Traffic Act, e-scooters are now their own class of vehicle, no longer simply treated like bicycles. The alcohol limit was lowered to 0.5‰ (bicycles stay at 0.8). You may ride from age 12 (earlier with a cycling licence), and a helmet is compulsory under 16. Required: a brake, bell, reflectors and a yellow indicator at each handlebar end; lights in the dark. One person only, no cargo. You ride on cycle paths or the carriageway — not on the pavement. In short: yes, from 12, with the right kit and under 0.5‰.
📋 The rules
- Since 1 May 2026, its own vehicle rules
- 0.5‰ limit (bicycle: 0.8)
- Ride from age 12
- Helmet compulsory under 16
- Indicator, reflectors, lights required; not on the pavement
🔓 Exceptions
- Where a cycle path exists, it must be used
- Pedestrian zones can be opened by municipal ordinance
- E-mopeds become motor vehicles from 1 Oct 2026 (plates, insurance)
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Riding over 0.5‰, without the required equipment or carrying a passenger is an administrative offence under the road-traffic rules, punished with a fine. The new 0.5‰ limit, the under-16 helmet rule and the indicator requirement have applied since 1 May 2026. Beware a myth: "e-scooters follow the bicycle's 0.8‰ rule" is false since 1 May 2026 — e-scooters now have the stricter 0.5‰ limit. Tip: ride on the cycle path or carriageway, never the pavement, and always wear a helmet under 16.

Since 1 May 2026, e-scooters have a 0.5‰ limit — stricter than the 0.8‰ for bicycles. The 36th amendment to the Road Traffic Act reclassified e-scooters as their own type of vehicle. Riding over the limit is an administrative offence and risks a fine.

From age 12 in traffic. With a cycling licence, possible from around 9 or 10, children may ride earlier. Under 12 without the licence, only when accompanied by a supervising adult. A helmet is also compulsory for everyone under 16.
Do I need a helmet?
For riders under 16, a helmet has been compulsory since 1 May 2026. For adults it isn't required but is strongly recommended. Regardless of age, you must have reflectors, lights in the dark, and an indicator at the handlebar.
Where can I ride?
Where there's a cycle path, you must use it; otherwise ride on the carriageway. The pavement and pedestrian crossings are generally prohibited. Pedestrian zones may only be ridden in if the municipality has opened them by ordinance.
What about e-mopeds?
E-mopeds are a more powerful class often used by delivery riders. From 1 October 2026 they're classed as motor vehicles — with a number plate, insurance, a licence and a helmet duty — and they may then no longer use cycle paths.
