Can I enter the forest in Austria?
Yes — on foot for recreation you may enter the forest freely. Under Forest Act § 33 ("freedom to roam"), anyone may enter the forest for recreation and stay there — walking, hiking, running. The right covers the entire forest area, not just paths: you may go cross-country on foot. Banned without the owner's consent are cycling/mountain-biking, riding horses, driving, camping and overnighting. Off-limits are reforestation and young-growth areas with trees under 3 m (Schonungen), fenced areas and timber-storage sites. During logging or hunting, access can be restricted by temporary closures. In short: yes, free on foot, but bike and tent only with permission.
📋 The rules
- Entering on foot for recreation is allowed
- Covers the whole forest area, even off-path
- Cycling/riding/camping only with consent
- Off-limits: young growth (trees under 3 m), fences
- Mind closures for hunting/logging
🔓 Exceptions
- Mountain-biking only on released trails
- Temporary closure zones are binding and marked
- Forest nurseries/plantings off-limits even on foot
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Unlawfully cycling, camping or driving in the forest, or ignoring a lawful closure, can be prosecuted as an administrative offence with fines (usually into the low hundreds of euros, under the Forest Act and provincial rules). Beware a myth: "the right to roam means I can also bike or camp anywhere in the forest" is false — free access is for being there on foot; cycling, camping and overnighting all need the owner's consent. Tip: for mountain-biking use designated trails and respect marked closure zones.

❓ Frequently asked
Can I enter the forest anywhere?
Yes, on foot and for recreation. The Forest Act grants, through the freedom to roam under § 33, a free right to enter the entire forest area, not just paths. So you may go cross-country, hike or run, as long as you don't enter closed or off-limits areas.
Can I mountain-bike in the forest?
Not freely. Cycling and mountain-biking are only allowed on paths and trails that the owner has expressly released, for example through contractual schemes. There is no general right to bike cross-country or on all paths in the forest.
Which areas are off-limits?
Off-limits are reforestation and young-growth areas with trees under three metres high, so-called Schonungen, as well as fenced areas, timber-storage sites and forestry facilities. These may not be entered even on foot, to protect the young trees and the operation.
Can the forest be closed?
Yes. For logging, hunting or other dangers the owner can set up temporary closure zones. These must be marked and are then binding. During ongoing forestry work, access can also be temporarily restricted for safety reasons.
Can I camp in the forest?
No, not without the forest owner's consent. The right to roam covers being there on foot, but not camping or overnighting. For a camp or an overnight stay in the forest you need the owner's express permission.
