Can I smoke in Switzerland?
It depends on the place — smoking indoors in public spaces is banned. Under the passive-smoking law (since 2010), smoking is banned in enclosed publicly accessible spaces and shared workplaces, such as restaurants, bars and offices. Separate, ventilated fumoirs are allowed; cantons may be stricter. For sales, since 1 October 2024 the Tobacco Products Act (TabPG) applies: tobacco and nicotine products such as e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches only from 18, plus advertising limits. Zürich example (illustrative): pure smoking venues are banned (stricter than federal), and service in a fumoir is allowed with the staff's written consent. In short: outdoors yes, indoors no — and buying only from 18.
📋 The rules
- Smoking banned in enclosed public spaces
- Separate, ventilated fumoirs allowed
- Tobacco & vapes sold only from 18 (since Oct 2024)
- Advertising limits under the TabPG
- Cantons may be stricter (Zürich: no pure smoking venues)
🔓 Exceptions
- Fumoir: separate, ventilated, self-closing door, not a passageway
- Service in a fumoir: some cantons ban it
- Outdoors (park, street): generally allowed
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Smoking in an enclosed public space where it's banned, or a venue not enforcing the ban, risks a fine and official measures. Selling tobacco or vapes to under-18s is prohibited and penalised. Beware a myth: "e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches are freely available" is false — since October 2024 the minimum age of 18 applies to them too. Tip: in venues smoke only in the designated fumoir, and expect the 18 age limit for vapes.

❓ Frequently asked
Where can I smoke?
Outdoors, for example in parks or on the street, smoking is generally allowed. In enclosed publicly accessible spaces and shared workplaces it's banned, that is in restaurants, bars and offices. It's allowed only in separate, ventilated smoking rooms known as fumoirs.
What is a fumoir?
A fumoir is a separated, ventilated smoking room with a self-closing door, which mustn't be a passageway. Smoking is allowed there. In some cantons service in the fumoir is banned, in others, such as Zürich, it's allowed with the written consent of the staff.
What age can I buy tobacco from?
Since 1 October 2024 a nationwide minimum age of 18 applies to all tobacco products. This replaces the earlier cantonal patchwork with ages of sometimes 16. Selling to under-18s by others is also prohibited and is penalised as an offence under the law.
Does this apply to e-cigarettes?
Yes. The Tobacco Products Act also covers e-cigarettes, liquids and nicotine pouches. The minimum age of 18 applies to them too since October 2024, along with advertising limits. A further revision with stricter advertising rules is planned, but the date is still open.
Can cantons be stricter?
Yes. The federal government sets a minimum standard and cantons may go beyond it. In Zürich, pure smoking venues are banned, which is stricter than federal law. So check the cantonal rules if you want to know exactly what applies at a particular place.
