May I take my dog abroad?
Yes — with an EU pet passport, a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination. To travel with a dog, cat or ferret you need an EU pet passport, identification by microchip and a rabies vaccination that, for a first vaccination, must have been given at least 21 days before the trip. As an EEA member, Liechtenstein issues the EU pet passport, and for travel into EU states the EU rules apply. On import, however, the hybrid status shows: because Liechtenstein lies in the Swiss customs and currency area, the Swiss animal-import rules apply — the authority in the country is the Office of Food Control and Veterinary Affairs (ALKVW). For entry into Switzerland and Liechtenstein, the EU pet passport with a rabies vaccination is enough. Without a valid vaccination or chip, the animal risks refusal, quarantine or being turned back.
📋 The rules
- Three basics: EU pet passport, microchip and a valid rabies vaccination. For a first vaccination, it must be given at least 21 days before crossing the border; timely boosters keep the protection alive.
- EEA issues the passport, Switzerland governs import: As an EEA member, Liechtenstein issues the EU pet passport; on import, the Swiss rules apply because the country lies in the Swiss customs area. The ALKVW is responsible.
- Entry CH/FL: For Switzerland and Liechtenstein, the EU pet passport with a rabies vaccination is enough; between Liechtenstein and Switzerland there is no animal check at an internal border.
- At most five animals privately: For a non-commercial trip, up to five pets apply; more, or a commercial purpose, trigger stricter trade and health requirements.
- Young puppies: The rabies vaccination is only possible from a certain age; with the 21-day waiting period, a puppy may therefore in practice only travel at about 15 weeks. Unvaccinated young animals are not admitted in many countries.
🔓 Exceptions
- Origin from a rabies-risk country: If the animal comes from a non-listed country, a blood test (titre determination) and a waiting time can be required — considerably more onerous than the standard trip.
- Tapeworm treatment: For entry into CH/FL, no Echinococcus treatment is needed; some countries (e.g. Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway) do require it before entry there.
- Swiss import ban: Dogs with cropped ears or a docked tail are subject to a Swiss import ban for animal-welfare reasons — this applies for Liechtenstein too.
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Travelling without the papers does not cost you a fine first, but costs the animal its entry. If the pet passport, the chip or a valid rabies vaccination is missing, the animal can be refused, put in quarantine, sent back or, in the extreme case, put down at the border — on import the check follows the Swiss rules and is carried out by customs and the ALKVW. If the chip number does not match the passport, the proof counts as invalid. Whoever passes off more than five animals as “private” or in truth runs a trade risks seizure and criminal charges. And the item nobody thinks of: with origin from a rabies-risk country and no titre determination, a long quarantine at your own cost follows — more expensive and more distressing than any vaccination given in good time.
