🍺 From what age may you buy alcohol in Liechtenstein?

With conditions
Quick answer

It depends on the drink — beer and wine are available from 16, spirits and alcopops only from 18. This is governed by the Children and Youth Act (KJG, LR 852.0) in Art. 69. Under 16 the consumption and possession of any alcohol is banned; from 16 fermented drinks such as beer, wine and cider are allowed. Distilled alcohol (spirits) and industrial alcopops, by contrast, stay off-limits until 18 — for them the same limit applies as for tobacco. The myth: 'In Liechtenstein you may drink anything at 16, spirits included.' Wrong — the current KJG draws a line at 16 and 18 just like Switzerland and Austria; older media reports about a single age of 16 are out of date. At events aimed at children and young people, spirits and alcopops may not be served at all.

📋 The rules

  • Beer and wine from 16. Under Art. 69 para. 3 KJG (LR 852.0) the consumption and possession of alcoholic drinks is banned under 16. From 16 fermented drinks such as beer, wine and cider are allowed.
  • Spirits and alcopops from 18. Distilled alcohol and industrial mixed drinks (alcopops) are banned for children and young people — that is, under 18 — under Art. 69 para. 4 KJG. Here the same limit applies as for tobacco.
  • A supply ban for sellers. The supply and passing on of alcohol to children and non-entitled young people is banned — even where it is supposedly meant for adults. Sellers must, in case of doubt, check the age.
  • No spirits at youth events. At events aimed specifically at children and young people, spirits and alcopops may not be served at all, regardless of the guests' age.
  • Cheap non-alcoholic option. In venues and at events open to young people, at least three non-alcoholic drinks must be cheaper than the cheapest alcoholic one in the same quantity — the so-called syrup article.

🔓 Exceptions

  • Parental supervision. The law targets supply and public consumption. Whether parents let their child have a sip at home is a matter of upbringing — the bans on supply and possession in public remain untouched by this.
  • Wine for cooking. Buying alcohol as a food ingredient or for adults in the household is permitted; what is banned is the targeted passing on for consumption to those under 16 or under 18 respectively.
  • Cross-border shopping. Anyone shopping in the nearby neighbouring countries is subject to their supply rules; on return and for consumption in Liechtenstein the KJG with its age limits applies again.

⚠️ Penalties & fines

Anyone who hands alcohol to minors risks fines — and businesses additionally their licence. The Children and Youth Act makes the banned supply and passing on a punishable matter; checks are carried out by the national police, the communes and the Office of Social Services, including test purchases. If a bar or shop is caught, besides the fine there are trade-law consequences up to withdrawal of the catering or sales licence. From the young people themselves the products can be confiscated, and the authorities inform the parents. Less obvious is the liability: anyone who keeps serving an intoxicated minor and an accident follows can become co-responsible under civil and criminal law. For staff at the till or the bar this means: when in doubt, ask for ID — the responsibility lies with whoever supplies, not with the young customer.

❓ Frequently asked

From what age may you buy beer in Liechtenstein?

Fermented drinks such as beer, wine and cider are allowed from the age of 16. Under 16 the consumption and possession of any alcohol is banned, which is why sellers must ask for identification in case of doubt.

May a 16-year-old buy spirits or alcopops?

No, distilled alcohol and industrial alcopops are allowed only from 18. For them the same age limit applies as for tobacco, so the widespread assumption that everything is allowed at 16 in Liechtenstein is not correct.

Is it true that everything applies from 16 in Liechtenstein?

No, that is an out-of-date myth from older media reports. The current Children and Youth Act draws a line at 16 for beer and wine and at 18 for spirits and alcopops, just like Switzerland and Austria.

What does a shop that sells to minors face?

The banned supply is punished with a fine, and checks are carried out with test purchases too. In addition the business faces trade-law consequences up to the withdrawal of its sales or catering licence, which can threaten its livelihood.

May parents give their child alcohol?

The law targets the supply and consumption in public, not what happens as a matter of upbringing at home. In public places and in retail, however, the age limits of 16 for fermented drinks and 18 for spirits apply without exception.
