Can I wash my car at home?
Mostly no. The Water Resources Act (WHG) bans harmful substances from reaching the groundwater. Washing a car releases oil, fuel residue, brake dust and detergents — if that water seeps into the soil, it's a breach. So washing the car on your own property and on the street is banned in most municipalities; many ban it entirely by by-law, others allow only washing with clear water on a sealed surface connected to the sewer. You're safe at a car wash, where the water is treated.
📋 The rules
- Dirty water must not reach the groundwater (WHG)
- On your own property and the street mostly banned — especially on unsealed ground
- Some municipalities allow only clear water on a sealed, sewered surface
- Engine washing, underbody and oil removal are off-limits almost everywhere
- Safe and allowed: the car wash (water is treated)
🔓 Exceptions
- Some municipalities allow washing with clear water, no chemicals, on a sealed parking space connected to the sewer
- Water protection zones: a strict, no-exception ban applies
- Cleaning a windscreen/bird droppings with a little water is usually fine
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Breaching the WHG or the municipal by-law is an administrative offence. Fines range, by state, severity and pollution, from a few tens to several hundred euros; for intentional or significant groundwater pollution the law theoretically provides fines up to €100,000. In water protection zones it's punished especially strictly.

❓ Frequently asked
Can I wash my car in my own garden?
In most municipalities, no. Washing releases oil, detergents and dust into the water; if that seeps into the soil it breaches the Water Resources Act. On unsealed ground it's banned practically everywhere.
Can I wash the car on the street?
No, that's generally not allowed — for the same environmental reasons. The dirty water runs into the drain or seeps away and burdens waters and groundwater.
Are there exceptions?
Some municipalities allow washing only with clear water, no chemicals, on a sealed surface connected to the sewer. In water protection zones a strict ban applies. What applies to you is in the local by-law.
What does illegal car washing cost?
Depending on the state and pollution, a few tens to several hundred euros. For significant or intentional groundwater pollution the WHG theoretically provides fines up to €100,000, and water protection zones are punished especially strictly.
Where can I wash the car safely?
At a car wash or self-service wash bay. There the wastewater is collected and treated, so no pollutants reach the groundwater. That's the legally safe option.
