Can I stay home paid when my child is sick in Sweden?
Yes — when your child is sick you may stay home with temporary parental benefit, called VAB. The Social Insurance Agency pays about 80% of your income (income for benefit, capped at 7.5 price base amounts), up to 120 days per child per year. VAB normally applies for children under 12; for children 12–16 a special reason is needed. A doctor's note is required from the 8th calendar day. Since 1 April 2026 you have 30 days to apply. Giving false information can bring repayment plus a sanction charge.
