Can I pay everything in cash?
No, you cannot just pay everything in cash: at a professional seller, cash payment is capped at €3,000. That ceiling comes from the anti-money-laundering law of 18 September 2017 and applies to the total price of goods or services, whether you pay in one go or in instalments — a €20,000 invoice may therefore not be settled for more than €3,000 in cash. It applies to traders, liberal professions, farmers and non-profits. For real estate, cash is completely forbidden (€0). Payments or gifts between two private individuals, and transactions with a bank, fall outside the ceiling. As legal tender, a trader may also refuse more than 50 coins and refuse unreasonably large amounts of cash. The much-discussed EU cash ceiling of €10,000 only applies from 10 July 2027 — in 2026 the stricter Belgian limit of €3,000 remains in force.
📋 The rules
- Professional cash payment capped at €3,000 for the total amount (even when paying in instalments)
- For real estate: no cash, €0
- Precious metals, scrap metal and copper cable: more strictly limited
- Payments between private individuals and with a bank: no €3,000 ceiling
- A trader may refuse more than 50 coins and unreasonably large amounts of cash
- Coming (not yet in force): an EU ceiling of €10,000 from 10 July 2027
🔓 Exceptions
- Between two private individuals, the €3,000 ceiling does not apply
- Transactions with a financial institution (bank) fall outside the ceiling
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Exceeding the cash ceiling risks an administrative fine up to 10 percent of the amount unlawfully paid or given in cash, with an absolute maximum of €1,800,000. Both the payer and the recipient can be liable. The Economic Inspectorate draws up reports on findings.
