Can I ride an e-scooter on the pavement in Belgium?
No — since 1 July 2022 pavements are banned for e-scooters. An e-scooter follows bicycle rules: ride the cycle path, or the road where none exists. The minimum age is 16 (except residential zones and play streets), speed is capped at 25 km/h, and passengers are banned — two on one shared scooter is the classic that costs money. Alcohol counts like driving: 0.5 per mille. Fines start at €58 and reach €174 for pavement riding and passengers; cities additionally designate drop zones for shared scooters — wrong parking gets billed.
📋 The rules
- Pavement = banned — cycle path, otherwise the road

🔓 Exceptions
- Under-16s: only residential zones, play streets and private land
- Pushing the scooter on the pavement is of course fine
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Pavement riding and passengers: fines to €174 (second degree); ordinary breaches €58. Drunk scooting: like drunk driving — immediate collection from €179 and possible bans. Badly parked shared scooters: GAS fines or fees.
