Can I park in front of a driveway?
Parking in front of someone else's driveway is forbidden; in front of your own only if you display your plate legibly. Under article 25.1.3° of the road code, parking in front of a property's carriage entrance is forbidden — except for vehicles whose registration plate is displayed legibly on that entrance. In practice: you may park in front of your own garage or driveway if a sign there shows your plate. The owner's permission is not enough for a third party — only the displayed plate counts. Stopping to let someone in or out, or to load and unload, is allowed in front of an entrance. In a blue zone you need no disc in front of your own garage. Note: even in front of your own garage without a displayed plate you can be fined (a fine or GAS fine).
📋 The rules
- Forbidden to park in front of property entrances (art. 25.1.3° of the road code)
- Exception: your own entrance, if your plate is displayed legibly on the entrance
- The owner's permission is not enough for another driver
- Stopping (dropping off, loading and unloading) in front of an entrance is allowed
- Blue zone: no parking disc needed in front of your own garage with a plate
- Fine: first-degree offence — €64 since 1 July 2026 (or a GAS fine)
🔓 Exceptions
- A garage that is no longer a real entrance (e.g. bricked up): the parking ban no longer applies there
- The police may have the vehicle towed, but are not obliged to
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Wrongly parking in front of an entrance is a first-degree offence: since 1 July 2026 an immediate settlement of €64 (+ €10.67), or in many municipalities a GAS parking fine of a comparable amount. The police can also have your vehicle towed at your cost.

❓ Frequently asked
Can I park in front of my own garage?
Yes, but only if your plate is displayed legibly on the garage or driveway. Without that sign you risk a fine even in front of your own garage.
My neighbour gives permission — can I park in front of their driveway?
No. The owner's permission does not count; only the plate displayed on the entrance makes parking allowed, and it matches the owner's own vehicle.
Can I stop there briefly to load something?
Yes. Stopping to load and unload or to let someone in or out is allowed in front of an entrance — parking is not.
Can my car be towed?
It can: the police may have a badly parked vehicle towed at the driver's cost, but are not obliged to. Usually a fine comes first.
