Can I sleep in a motorhome?
Conditional: sleeping in a motorhome is legal in most of mainland Portugal. The correct law is Law 66/2021, which added art. 50-A to the Highway Code. Overnighting (parked, occupants inside, 22:00–07:00) is legal wherever any vehicle may park, for a maximum of 48 hours per municipality, and the vehicle must be type-approved. It becomes prohibited camping (autocaravanismo) the moment anything goes outside the vehicle — awnings, tables/chairs, levelling chocks, clotheslines. Emptying grey, black or chemical-WC water outside proper stations is banned everywhere. Municipal rules and signage override the general permission. Motorhome Service Areas (ASA) allow longer (up to ~72h) and have facilities. In short: sleeping yes, camping no.
📋 The rules
- Overnight legal where you can park, max 48h per municipality
- Putting out awnings/tables/chairs: banned camping
- Emptying water outside stations: banned everywhere
- Municipal rules and signage override
- Service Areas (ASA): longer stay + facilities
🔓 Exceptions
- Protected/Natura 2000/coastal areas: overnight banned outside authorised spots
- Sensitive parks: no ASA within 500 m of the high-tide line
- Local signage may ban overnighting at certain points
⚠️ Penalties & fines
General fines are €60–€300; inside Natura 2000, protected or coastal areas, they rise to €120–€600 (doubled). Beware a myth: "all overnight/wild camping is banned in Portugal" — false; Law 66/2021 re-legalised overnighting; only camping behaviour and protected/coastal areas are restricted. The governing law is 66/2021 (not 72/2021). To stay compliant: sleep inside the vehicle where parking is allowed (up to 48h per municipality), don't set up tables, awnings or chairs outside, empty water only at proper stations, and in protected or coastal areas park only in authorised spots.

❓ Frequently asked
Can I sleep in a motorhome in Portugal?
Yes, in most of the territory. Overnighting, with occupants inside the vehicle between 22:00 and 07:00, is legal wherever any vehicle can park, up to 48 hours per municipality. The vehicle must be type-approved. Municipal rules and signage can, however, restrict overnighting in certain places.
What's the difference between overnighting and camping?
Overnighting is sleeping inside the parked vehicle. It becomes camping, or autocaravanismo, banned outside proper areas, the moment anything goes outside the vehicle: awnings, tables, chairs, levelling chocks or clotheslines. Overnighting is tolerated; camping behaviour in public is not.
Can I overnight on a beach or protected area?
As a rule, no. In protected areas, the Natura 2000 network and coastal zones, overnighting and parking are banned outside expressly authorised spots. There, you may only park in marked bays, and fines are higher, ranging from €120 to €600.
Where can I empty the water?
Grey, black and chemical-WC water can only be emptied at proper stations, such as Motorhome Service Areas. Emptying it in public or in nature is banned across the territory and is an offence. ASAs offer discharge points and water filling.
Is it true that overnighting is banned?
No. It's a myth that all overnighting or wild camping is banned in Portugal. Law 66/2021 re-legalised overnighting in a motorhome where you can park, up to 48 hours per municipality. What's restricted is camping behaviour and protected and coastal areas.
