Am I entitled to child benefit in Luxembourg, and how much?
Yes — and since 2016 every child gives the same amount, paid by the Children's Future Fund, not by your employer. The major reform (law of 23 July 2016) individualised the benefit: an identical amount per child, with no income test and no distinction by birth order, whereas the old system raised the sum with the number of children. Since 1 October 2021 the benefit has been indexed. According to the CAE, the base amount is 307.35 euros a month per child (value since 1 May 2025, index 968.04), with a top-up of 23.23 euros from age 6 and 57.99 euros from age 12. It is paid until 18, or 25 if the child is studying. The myth: "the amount climbs with each extra child" — false since 2016; and because the sum is indexed, even the official page can lag a bracket behind: always check the amount currently in force.
📋 The rules
- Paid by the CAE: child benefit is paid by the Children's Future Fund (Zukunftskeess), not by the employer.
- One amount per child: since the law of 23 July 2016, each child gives the same amount, with no income test.
- Indexation: since 1 October 2021 the benefit is indexed and moves with the cost of living.
- Base amount: 307.35 euros a month per child according to the CAE (index 968.04, since 1 May 2025).
- Age top-ups: +23.23 euros from age 6 and +57.99 euros from age 12; paid until 18, or 25 if the child is studying.
🔓 Exceptions
- Cross-border workers: the child of a cross-border worker affiliated in Luxembourg gives entitlement, under the EU coordination rules.
- Other benefits: a birth grant, a back-to-school allowance and a special allowance for a disabled child are added.
- Indexed figure: the exact amount changes at each index bracket; the CAE page is authoritative, but may show a value already overtaken.
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Here there is no fine, but lost rights or sums to repay. Failing to register the birth or to apply in time delays payment, and a benefit is not always paid retroactively without limit: the delay costs money. An unreported change of situation — a move, the end of studies, a separation, the other parent taking up work in a neighbouring country — can trigger an overpayment that the CAE claws back, sometimes over several months. For cross-border workers, a poorly coordinated double claim between two countries stalls the file while the competent State and the differential top-up are worked out. Finally, relying on an old amount read on a forum or an outdated page leads to bad budgeting: the sum is indexed, it has risen in brackets, and only the figure currently in force at the CAE really counts.

❓ Frequently asked
How much is child benefit per child?
According to the Children's Future Fund, the base amount is 307.35 euros a month per child, the value in force since 1 May 2025 at index 968.04. Top-ups of 23.23 euros from age six and 57.99 euros from age twelve are added, but these amounts are indexed and change.
Does the amount rise with the number of children?
No, not since the 2016 reform: each child gives the same individual amount, whatever the number of children in the household. The old system, where the sum per child climbed with family size, no longer exists, which still surprises many parents.
Who pays child benefit in Luxembourg?
It is the Children's Future Fund, known as the Zukunftskeess, that pays the benefit, not the parent's employer. The claim is made to it, and it also handles the birth grant, the back-to-school allowance and parental leave.
Until what age is the benefit paid?
Child benefit is in principle paid until the child turns 18, then can continue until 25 if the child goes on to study. Keeping it beyond 18 requires proof of schooling or training to the Children's Future Fund.
Is a cross-border worker entitled to Luxembourg benefit?
Yes, the child of a cross-border worker affiliated in Luxembourg is entitled to it, within the EU coordination rules. Where both countries are involved, Luxembourg may pay a differential top-up, but the claim must be well coordinated to avoid blockages.
