Can I travel with an expired ID card?
It depends on the card and the country. French ID cards issued between 2 January 2004 and 31 December 2013 to adults get an automatic 5-year extension (real validity of 15 years), with no step needed, even if the printed date has passed. But this extension isn't recognised by all countries: Belgium, Lithuania, Norway and Romania refuse it, others tolerate it without guarantee. The Foreign Affairs ministry recommends travelling with a valid passport. For new cards (bank-card format), validity is 10 years: a genuinely expired card can't be used to travel.
📋 The rules
- ID cards 2004-2013 (adults): automatic 5-year extension
- Extension not recognised by Belgium, Lithuania, Norway, Romania
- United Kingdom: no ID card accepted since 1 October 2021
- New cards (since 2021): 10-year validity
- Recommendation: travel with a valid passport
🔓 Exceptions
- Cards issued to minors: no 5-year extension
- Many EU countries tolerate the extended card, without official guarantee
- Travel outside the Schengen area: a passport (sometimes a visa) is required
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Travelling with a card not accepted by the destination can mean a boarding or entry refusal, even a fine (up to €200 in Belgium for entering with an expired card). A genuinely expired card (outside the recognised extension) isn't a valid travel document. Always check, before leaving, the destination country's position (the ministry's 'travel advice' section) and prefer a valid passport.

❓ Frequently asked
Can an expired ID card be used to travel?
Only in the special case of cards issued between 2004 and 2013 to adults, automatically extended by 5 years, and only in countries that recognise this extension. A genuinely expired card isn't a valid travel document.
Which countries refuse the extended card?
Belgium, Lithuania, Norway and Romania refuse the 5-year extension. The United Kingdom no longer accepts any ID card since 1 October 2021. Other countries tolerate it without official guarantee.
How do I know if my card is extended?
If your cardboard card was issued between 2 January 2004 and 31 December 2013, while you were an adult, its validity is automatically extended by 5 years, even if the printed date has passed. Cards issued to minors aren't concerned.
Is it better to travel with a passport?
Yes. The Foreign Affairs ministry recommends travelling with a valid passport, which avoids any dispute over the extension. This is especially true for countries that refuse or only tolerate the extended ID card.
What's the risk with a card not accepted?
A boarding or entry refusal, and sometimes a fine (up to €200 in Belgium). Always check the ministry's travel-advice section for your destination before leaving.
