Can I light a fire in my fireplace?
Yes generally, but with strong limits in polluted areas. Lighting a fireplace fire at home is allowed in most regions. But in areas covered by an Air Protection Plan (PPA) — over 1,200 communes, including much of Île-de-France (Paris and 400+ communes) — using an open-hearth fireplace as main heating is banned. The open hearth heats poorly (10-15% efficiency) and emits a lot of fine particles; a high-performance insert or closed stove is recommended (and subsidised). Check the prefectural order for your area.
📋 The rules
- Fireplace fire allowed in most communes
- In PPA zones (incl. Île-de-France): open hearth banned as main heating
- Open hearth: low efficiency and heavy fine-particle emissions
- High-performance insert / closed stove recommended (subsidies)
- Check the prefectural order and local rules
🔓 Exceptions
- Decorative/supplementary use sometimes tolerated under conditions, even in sensitive zones
- Subsidies (MaPrimeRénov', CEE, 5.5% VAT) to replace an open hearth with an insert
- Outside PPA zones, the fireplace fire stays free (except local orders)
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Lighting an open-hearth fire against a prefectural order (PPA zone) brings a fine of up to €450 (and up to €1,500 for a 5th-class offence, €3,000 repeat in some cases). For smoke nuisance to neighbours, a civil action for abnormal neighbour disturbance is possible. A poorly maintained flue can also engage your liability (fire, insurance).

❓ Frequently asked
Are fireplace fires banned in the Paris region?
The open hearth is banned as main heating in Île-de-France (sensitive zone, Paris and 400+ communes) under the Air Protection Plan. A high-performance insert or closed stove stays allowed.
Why is the open hearth a problem?
Because it heats poorly (10-15% efficiency) and emits a great deal of fine particles, very harmful to air quality. A modern insert or closed stove exceeds 70% efficiency and pollutes far less.
What's the fine?
Lighting an open-hearth fire against a prefectural order can cost up to €450, even more for a 5th-class offence. If smoke disturbs neighbours, a civil action is also possible.
Are there subsidies to switch?
Yes. Replacing an open hearth with a high-performance insert qualifies for help such as MaPrimeRénov', energy-saving certificates (CEE) and 5.5% VAT, depending on your income and the equipment.
And outside the Paris region?
Outside PPA zones, the fireplace fire stays allowed, except for a specific municipal or prefectural order (pollution episode, drought). Always check the order in force, especially during winter pollution peaks.
