Can I set off fireworks?
Firecrackers are banned year-round — and even permitted fireworks have just one window a year. The sale and use of loud pyrotechnic articles in categories F2 and F3 without a significant light effect — that is, classic firecrackers, flash bangers and banger batteries — are banned in Slovakia. The remaining, permitted F2 fireworks may be used only in the window from 31 December 18:00 to 1 January 02:00. The same window applies to F3, which may be sold only to people over 21. Careful: a municipality may, by its own ordinance, restrict or ban fireworks entirely, going beyond the statute — and several cities have done exactly that. So check your municipality's ordinance before you buy: whichever of the two rules is stricter is the one that governs.
📋 The rules
- Loud F2/F3 articles without a light effect: banned
- The ban covers firecrackers and banger batteries
- Permitted F2: only 31 Dec 18:00 – 1 Jan 02:00
- F3: same window, sold only to those over 21
- A municipality may ban more by ordinance
🔓 Exceptions
- Category F1 (the weakest) has a lighter regime and is available from 15
- Professional displays are run by a certified operator under permit
- Several cities, Bratislava among them, impose a stricter ban by ordinance
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Using banned pyrotechnics, or setting off fireworks outside the permitted window, is fined from €500 to €2,000; in less serious cases the police may deal with it by a lower on-the-spot penalty. If the municipality has passed its own ordinance, breaching it is sanctioned separately — and that applies even where the article would otherwise be lawful under the statute. Cause damage to health or property and civil liability is added to the fine, with criminal liability for a serious outcome. So check your municipality's ordinance, not just the statute — whichever is stricter governs.

❓ Frequently asked
Are firecrackers banned?
Yes, all year round. Loud F2 and F3 pyrotechnic articles without a significant light effect — classic firecrackers, flash bangers and banger batteries — are banned from both sale and use. This is not a seasonal restriction but a permanent prohibition.
When may I set off permitted fireworks?
Category F2 only in the window from 31 December 18:00 to 1 January 02:00. The same window applies to category F3, which may be sold only to people over 21. Outside that window, setting off even a permitted article is an offence.
Can a municipality ban what the law allows?
Yes. A municipality may restrict or ban the use of fireworks entirely by generally binding ordinance, going beyond the statute, on grounds of public order or health. Several cities, Bratislava among them, have used that power.
What is the fine?
From €500 to €2,000 for using banned pyrotechnics or setting fireworks off outside the permitted window. In less serious cases the police may impose a lower on-the-spot penalty. A breach of the municipal ordinance is sanctioned separately.
What if I cause damage?
Civil liability for damage to health and property is added to the fine, and you pay it in full. Where the outcome is serious — grievous bodily harm or a fire, for instance — criminal liability can follow as well.
