Can I set off fireworks in Hungary?
Depends what's in your hand — and forget firecrackers all year round. Pyrotechnics are sorted into classes: class 1 and 2 low-risk items (sparklers, small fireworks) can be bought and used all year if you endanger nobody — with age limits (class 2 from 16). The classic class-3 New Year fireworks may only be bought 28–31 December and fired exclusively from 31 December 18:00 to 1 January 06:00, adults only. Class 4 (professional calibre) is off-limits to private individuals for both possession and use. And the Hungarian classic: firecrackers (petárda) are banned all year — mere possession is an offence, with fines up to 150,000 HUF. Extra twist: more and more municipalities (including Budapest districts) restrict even New Year use locally — check the local decree before lighting anything.
📋 The key rules
- Classes 1–2: usable all year (class 2 from 16), without endangering others
- Class 3 (New Year fireworks): buy 28–31 Dec, use 31 Dec 18:00 – 1 Jan 06:00, 18+
- Class 4: licensed pyrotechnicians only — banned for private individuals
- Firecrackers: banned all year — possession alone is punishable
- Local municipal restrictions can narrow even New Year use
🔓 Exceptions
- Unused class-3 products can typically be returned to the seller in early January (usually by the 5th)
- Organised licensed shows: different rules under a pyrotechnician's licence
⚠️ Penalties
Possessing or using firecrackers: misdemeanour fines up to 150,000 HUF plus confiscation. Firing outside the window or class rules also draws fines; causing injury brings criminal liability on top.

❓ Frequently asked questions
Until when can I fire on New Year's Eve?
From 31 December 18:00 to 1 January 06:00 — using class-3 fireworks outside that window is an offence.
Why are firecrackers banned when fireworks aren't?
Firecrackers are blast-effect devices with unpredictable injury risk — which is why Hungary bans even possessing them, not just setting them off.
What do I do with leftover fireworks?
Unused class-3 products go back to the place of purchase in the first days of January (typically by the 5th) — storing them at home isn't allowed.
Are sparklers regulated too?
They sit in class 1, the lowest-risk tier: usable all year — still watch children, as they burn with an open flame.
