Can I go 10 km/h over the limit?
No — there is no legal tolerance in Latvia. This is the commonest myth on Latvian roads: exceeding the limit by up to 10 km/h in an ordinary car brings a warning, but it remains an infringement, not a permitted margin. The fines climb steeply. For 11–20 km/h — a warning or €20 outside a built-up area and €40 inside one. For 21–30 km/h — €40 and €80. For 31–40 km/h — €80 and €160. For 41–50 km/h — €160–220 and €240–320. From 51 km/h you start losing the licence, and above 70 km/h it is €1,400–2,000 plus revocation for 12–36 months.
📋 The rules
- Up to 10 km/h: a warning — but still an offence
- 11–20 km/h: €20 outside · €40 in a built-up area
- 21–30: €40/€80 · 31–40: €80/€160
- 51–60 km/h: a driving ban begins
- Above 70 km/h: €1,400–2,000 + 12–36 months
🔓 Exceptions
- The table covers mopeds, motorcycles, cars and goods vehicles up to 7.5 t
- Buses, tractors and heavier vehicles have a separate, harsher table
- In a built-up area, residential zone or courtyard the fine is often doubled
⚠️ Penalties & fines
The fine is only the start — at the top you lose the licence. For 61–70 km/h outside a built-up area it is €720–960 and a driving ban of nine months; inside one, €1,040–1,400 and revocation for 9–12 months. Above 70 km/h it is €1,400–2,000 and revocation for 12–36 months. The €2,000 is not an arbitrary number: it is the statutory maximum administrative fine for a natural person — 400 penalty units. Penalty points accumulate as well, and they can cost you the licence even where each individual offence looks minor.

❓ Frequently asked
Is there a 10 km/h tolerance in Latvia?
There is not. Exceeding the limit by up to 10 km/h in an ordinary car brings a warning, but in law it remains an infringement rather than a permitted margin. A warning is not the same as permission.
What is the fine for 20 km/h over?
For 11–20 km/h over, an ordinary car driver faces a warning or €20 outside a built-up area, and a warning or €40 inside a built-up or residential area. Location changes the figure.
At what point do I lose my licence?
From 51 km/h over. Outside a built-up area that means €240–320 and a three-month ban; inside one, €360–460 and a six-month ban. Above that the periods rise sharply.
What changed in 2024?
On 28 May tougher penalties took effect for gross speeding. A new bracket above 70 km/h was introduced, carrying €1,400–2,000 and licence revocation for 12 to 36 months.
Why is the maximum exactly €2,000?
Because administrative fines are written in the statutes as penalty units, one unit is €5, and the ceiling for a natural person is 400 units. That is precisely €2,000.
