Can I drive after one beer in Lithuania?
The law does not talk about pints — it talks about per mille. For an ordinary Category B driver with more than 2 years of experience the limit is 0.4‰ — legally an offence starts at 0.41‰. For novice drivers (first two years), taxi, moped, motorcycle, heavy-vehicle and dangerous-goods drivers the tolerance is zero: even 0.01–0.4‰ brings €150–300, and for novices €230–300. From 0.41 to 1.5‰ the fine jumps to €800–1100 with a mandatory licence ban of one to one and a half years. Above 1.5‰ it is no longer an administrative matter — criminal liability kicks in under the Criminal Code: a fine, arrest or imprisonment, plus possible confiscation of the car.
📋 The rules
- Experienced driver limit: 0.4‰ (offence from 0.41‰)
- Novices (2 years) and professionals: 0‰
- 0.41–1.5‰: €800–1100 + ban 1–1.5 yrs
- Over 1.5‰ or refusing a test: criminal liability
- Handing the wheel to a drunk person: €90–140 for the one who did
🔓 Exceptions
- A novice driver is one with less than two years of driving experience; for them even 0.2‰ already means a €230–300 fine
- Zero tolerance also applies to taxi, moped, motorcycle, tricycle, over-3.5 t and more-than-9-seat vehicle drivers
- Refusing or evading a sobriety test is treated as intoxication and carries the same liability as 0.41–1.5‰, and with aggravating factors it becomes criminal
⚠️ Penalties & fines
The consequences escalate in steps, and at the top sits car confiscation. From 0.41 to 1.5‰ Article 422 of the ANK sets €800–1100 and a mandatory licence ban of one to one and a half years (or a shorter ban together with a ban on driving without an alcohol interlock). Above 1.5‰ or after refusing a test, criminal liability applies: under the Criminal Code you face a fine, arrest or imprisonment of up to one year, a driving ban of up to 3 years and confiscation of the car. Even someone else's car can be taken: if the vehicle does not belong to the offender, the court can recover its value. After a ban you must retake your exams, and a criminal record complicates work and sharply raises insurance.

❓ Frequently asked
How much alcohol is allowed when driving?
For an ordinary driver with more than two years of experience the limit is 0.4‰, and an offence starts at 0.41‰. For novices as well as professional and heavy-transport drivers a zero-tolerance rule applies instead.
Is one beer really too much?
For an experienced driver one small beer often stays within the 0.4‰ limit, but that depends on body mass and time. For a novice or a professional even the smallest amount already means a fine, so not drinking at all is safest.
What happens above 1.5‰?
From 1.51‰ it is no longer administrative but a criminal case under the Criminal Code. You face a fine, arrest or imprisonment of up to one year, a driving ban of up to three years and possible confiscation of the car.
Can the car really be confiscated?
Yes. In a criminal case the court can confiscate the vehicle if it belongs to the offender. If the car belongs to another person, the state can recover its value from the offender under the principle of proportionality.
Who counts as a novice driver?
A novice is a driver whose experience is shorter than two years. For such a driver the alcohol tolerance is zero, and even 0.2‰ brings a fine of €230 to €300 along with stricter checks on the road.
