Can I go 10 km/h over the limit without a fine?
No — there is no legal speed tolerance in Lithuania. This is the most common myth on Lithuanian roads: going up to 10 km/h over the limit gets you a warning, but it is still an offence, not an allowed margin. Fines climb fast. For 10–20 km/h — €12–30; for 20–30 km/h — €30–90; for 30–40 km/h — €120–170; for 40–50 km/h — €170–230. Cross the 50 km/h line and the fine jumps to €450–550, or up to €700 for someone without a licence, plus a mandatory driving ban of one to six months. All of this sits in Article 416 of the ANK — not 417, as it is often miscited. Radar has a measurement margin, but the law grants no leniency threshold, and a warning is still a recorded breach rather than a free allowance you can count on.
📋 The rules
- Up to 10 km/h: a warning — but still an offence
- 10–20 km/h: €12–30 · 20–30 km/h: €30–90
- 30–40 km/h: €120–170 · 40–50 km/h: €170–230
- Over 50 km/h: €450–550, no licence — up to €700
- From 30 km/h over, novice and heavy-vehicle drivers face a mandatory ban
🔓 Exceptions
- For novice drivers (first 2 years) and drivers of vehicles over 3.5 t or with more than 9 seats, a licence ban is mandatory already from 30–40 km/h over the limit
- In a residential zone where 20 km/h applies, the threshold is crossed very quickly, and the officer also weighs the circumstances
- The speed-meter margin is deducted from the measured speed automatically, but it is not a legal tolerance and the law guarantees no fixed size for it
⚠️ Penalties & fines
The fine is only the start; at the top you lose your licence. For going more than 50 km/h over the limit a driving ban of 1 to 6 months is mandatory, and for novice drivers, drivers of heavy vehicles (over 3.5 t or more than 9 seats) and people with no driving licence — from one year to one year and six months. For 30–40 km/h and 40–50 km/h a ban is also mandatory for novices and heavy-vehicle drivers — 3–6 and 6–12 months respectively. €450–550 is no accident: it is the threshold raised by the 2022 reform (ANK amendment No. XIV-1446), which is why older web pages still show lower sums. After a ban you often have to retake the exam, and repeat offences are logged and can push up your insurance.

❓ Frequently asked
Is there a 10 km/h tolerance in Lithuania?
There is no legal tolerance. Going up to 10 km/h over the limit gets the driver a warning, but legally it is still an offence, not an allowed margin. A warning is not the same thing as permission to drive faster.
What is the fine for 30 km/h over?
Exceeding the limit by more than 20 but no more than 30 km/h carries a fine of €30 to €90 under Article 416 of the ANK. The officer sets the exact amount based on the circumstances of the offence and the driver's behaviour.
When is the licence taken away?
Once you cross 50 km/h over the limit, a driving ban of 1 to 6 months is mandatory for all drivers. For novice drivers and drivers of heavy vehicles the ban already applies from 30–40 km/h over the limit.
Is speeding under Article 416 or 417?
Speeding is set out in Article 416 of the ANK, not 417. Article 417 covers ignoring road signs, phone use and other breaches, so the numbers people often confuse make no difference to the fine itself or to the possible driving ban.
How much does going over 50 km/h cost?
For a person who holds a licence the fine is €450 to €550, and for someone without that right it is €450 to €700. On top of that a driving ban is mandatory, and for novice drivers the ban runs up to one and a half years.
