Can I drive without car insurance?
No: third-party liability insurance is mandatory for every vehicle. In Greece, third-party liability insurance is mandatory for all vehicles (gov.gr service: "Mandatory motor vehicle insurance"). A unified electronic cross-check runs twice a year, on 1 March and 1 August, flagging uninsured vehicles, unpaid road tax and (from 2026) a vehicle without a KTEO (technical inspection). Those flagged get a 15-day deadline to comply. Non-compliance brings a doubling of fines and removal of plates and registration; plates are returned only after proof of valid insurance, KTEO and payment of fines. In short: driving uninsured is banned and checked electronically.
📋 The rules
- Third-party insurance mandatory for every vehicle
- Electronic check: 1 March and 1 August
- 15-day deadline to comply
- Non-compliance: doubled fines + plate removal
- From 2026, the check also covers the KTEO
🔓 Exceptions
- A vehicle insured and with a valid KTEO: normal use
- Re-registration after removal: with proof of insurance/KTEO
- Green Card: for certain non-EEA countries
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Driving uninsured brings fines per check: about €250 for motorcycles, €500 for cars and up to €1,000 for buses/trucks, amounts that are doubled on continued non-compliance. A missing KTEO or unpaid fees bring fines up to €1,000, with total exposure up to about €2,000 per six-month cycle. In every non-compliance case, plates and registration are removed. If you cause an accident uninsured, you pay the third-party damage yourself (via the guarantee fund, then recovery). To stay compliant: keep valid insurance and a KTEO, pay road tax on time and, if you don't use the vehicle, deposit the plates temporarily.

What fine do I risk uninsured?
Fines per check are about €250 for motorcycles, €500 for cars and up to €1,000 for buses and trucks, and are doubled on continued non-compliance. In addition, the plates and registration are removed until you comply.
What if I don't comply within 15 days?

Does insurance cover my own car?
Mandatory third-party liability insurance covers damage to third parties, not your own vehicle. To cover your car in case of accident, theft or other risks, you need optional (comprehensive) insurance, separate from the mandatory third-party cover.
