Can I park in a controlled zone without a ticket?
No: in a controlled zone you need a ticket or a resident card. There are two bay types: white (visitor, paid) and blue (resident permit). In Athens charging applies Mon–Fri 09:00–21:00 and Sat 09:00–16:00 (free on Sundays), at €0.50/30 min with a 3-hour maximum stay. You pay via app (myAthensPass / THESi), POS or scratch card. The resident card costs ~€10/year and is valid only in your own zone. Parking without a ticket or overstaying is fined. In short: pay or get a resident card.
📋 The rules
- White bays: paid visitors; blue: residents
- Athens: charging Mon–Fri 09:00–21:00, free Sundays
- Price €0.50/30 min, max stay 3 hours
- Pay by app/SMS, POS or scratch card
- Resident card ~€10/year (your zone only)
🔓 Exceptions
- Sundays/off-hours: free parking
- Resident-card holder: free in their own zone
- Disabled (AmeA) bays: a separate Road Code matter
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Parking in a controlled bay without a ticket or beyond the allowed time is fined with a municipal penalty: in Athens and Thessaloniki now €30 (tripled from €10 in January 2026). This is separate from the national Road Code fine for genuinely illegal parking (€150 + licence withdrawal, Law 5209/2025). Beware myths: "the fine is €10" — outdated (now €30); "50% discount for fast payment" — abolished under the new Road Code; and don't conflate the €30 municipal fine with the €150 illegal-parking fine. To stay compliant: pay via the app, keep to the time, and if you're a resident get a card.

❓ Frequently asked
Do I have to pay for parking in the blue/white zone?
Yes, in white visitor bays parking is paid via app, SMS, POS or scratch card, within the charging hours. Blue bays are for resident permit-holders. Outside the hours and on Sundays, in Athens, parking is free.
How much does it cost and how long can I stay?
In Athens the price is about €0.50 per 30 minutes, with a maximum continuous stay of 3 hours (about €6). The charging hours are Monday–Friday 09:00–21:00 and Saturday 09:00–16:00, while on Sundays parking is free.
How do I get a resident card?
The resident card is issued online, costs about €10 per year and requires documents such as the E1 form, proof of residence and the vehicle registration. It's valid only in your zone of residence, not across the whole city.
How much is the fine if I don't pay?
The municipal fine for parking without a ticket or overstaying is now €30 in Athens and Thessaloniki, triple the old €10. It's different from the Road Code €150 fine for genuinely illegal parking, e.g. on a pavement.
Is there a discount for fast payment?
No. Under the new Road Code (Law 5209/2025) the old 50% discount for fast payment of fines was abolished. The fine is now paid in full. It's one of the most common outdated claims circulating online.
