Can I claim Disability Allowance in Ireland?
Yes if you're aged 16–66 with a lasting disability and pass the means test. Disability Allowance pays a personal rate of €254 a week in 2026, with an increase for a qualified adult of €168.60 and Child Support Payments of €58 (under 12) or €78 (12+). You must be aged 16 to 66 with a disability that has lasted, or is expected to last, at least one year. It's means-tested, but the first €50,000 of savings is disregarded, and a parent's income isn't counted, so a 16–17-year-old at home can qualify. You can earn up to €165 a week from work with no effect; 50% of earnings between €165 and €375 is disregarded, and earnings over €375 are fully assessed. You can keep DA while in school, hospital or residential care. In short: yes, within the means test, with generous work and savings disregards.
📋 The rules
- Personal rate €254 a week (2026)
- Aged 16 to 66 with a year-long disability
- Means-tested; first €50,000 savings ignored
- Earn up to €165 a week from work with no effect
- A parent's income isn't counted
🔓 Exceptions
- You can keep DA while in school, hospital or residential care
- A PhD scholarship up to €20,000/year is disregarded
- Moving home for care: up to €337,500 of the proceeds is disregarded
⚠️ Penalties & fines
DA isn't a fine-based scheme, but you must report any change of circumstances (such as starting work) and provide proof of earnings, or risk overpayment recovery. The personal rate is €254 a week, with the first €50,000 of capital disregarded and a weekly earnings disregard of €165 (then 50% to €375). From September 2026, someone moving from DA into employment keeps their Fuel Allowance for up to 5 years, and from January 2026 may qualify for the Back to Work Family Dividend. Beware a myth: "any work or any savings stops your payment" is false — you can work part-time within the earnings disregards and hold up to €50,000 in savings before capital affects your means at all. To claim: apply to the DSP with the medical report and means details.

❓ Frequently asked
Who can claim Disability Allowance?
Disability Allowance is for people aged 16 to 66 who have an injury, disease or physical or mental disability that has continued, or is expected to continue, for at least a year, and which substantially restricts their ability to work. It's means-tested, and you must also satisfy a habitual residence condition to qualify.
How much is Disability Allowance in 2026?
The personal rate of Disability Allowance is €254 a week in 2026. There's an increase of up to €168.60 for a qualified adult, and Child Support Payments of €58 a week for a child under 12 or €78 for a child aged 12 or over. The exact amount depends on the means test.
Can I work and keep Disability Allowance?
Yes, within limits. You can earn up to €165 a week from work without it affecting your payment. Earnings between €165 and €375 are half-disregarded, and earnings above €375 are fully assessed. Many people do supported or part-time work while keeping some Disability Allowance, but you must tell the Department of any earnings.
Do my savings affect it?
Disability Allowance is means-tested, but the first €50,000 of capital or savings is completely disregarded. Above that, savings are assessed on a sliding scale. So having moderate savings won't stop your payment. There are also special disregards, such as for proceeds from selling your home when moving into care.
Does my parents' income count?
No. For Disability Allowance, a parent's income is not taken into account, so a 16 or 17-year-old living in the family home can qualify in their own right based on their own means. This is different from some other supports, and means young people with disabilities can claim independently of their parents.
