Can I claim the Fuel Allowance in Ireland?
Yes if you're on a qualifying payment, or aged 66+, and pass the means test. From January 2026 the Fuel Allowance is €38 a week (up from €33), paid for 28 weeks over the winter season. If you're 66 or over, you don't need a qualifying payment — you just pass the means test. If you're under 66, you must be getting a qualifying payment such as Disability Allowance, Invalidity Pension, One-Parent Family Payment or long-term Jobseeker's Allowance. The over-66 income limit is gross weekly income up to €534 (single) or €1,068 (couple), with the first €50,000 of capital disregarded. Only one Fuel Allowance per household is paid. In short: yes, on a qualifying payment or as an over-66 within the means test.
📋 The rules
- €38 a week for 28 weeks (2026)
- Over-66s: just pass the means test
- Under-66s need a qualifying payment
- Over-66 limit: €534 single / €1,068 couple
- Only one Fuel Allowance per household
🔓 Exceptions
- Not paid if heating is fully included in your accommodation
- From Jan 2026, Working Family Payment recipients get it automatically
- Take it weekly or in 2 lump sums (September and January)
⚠️ Penalties & fines
There are no penalties, but timing matters — if you apply after the season starts, it's not backdated, so you lose the missed weeks. The rate is €38 a week for 28 weeks; the 2025/26 season ran from 22 September 2025 and was exceptionally extended by 4 weeks to 1 May 2026. A Telephone Support Allowance of €2.50/week is added automatically if you also get Fuel Allowance plus the Living Alone Increase. Only one Fuel Allowance is paid per household; if someone is 66+, they should be the applicant. Beware a myth: "if I take in a tenant or rent a room I lose it" is false — you can earn up to €14,000 a year from renting a room without affecting Fuel Allowance, and the lodger needn't qualify themselves. To claim: apply to the DSP before the season starts.

❓ Frequently asked
How much is the Fuel Allowance in 2026?
From January 2026, the Fuel Allowance is €38 a week, up from €33. It's paid for 28 weeks over the winter heating season. You can choose to receive it weekly, or in two lump sums, usually paid in September and January. The 2025/26 season was also exceptionally extended by four weeks to 1 May 2026.
Who qualifies for the Fuel Allowance?
If you're aged 66 or over, you just need to pass the means test. If you're under 66, you must be getting a qualifying social welfare payment, such as Disability Allowance, Invalidity Pension, the One-Parent Family Payment, or long-term Jobseeker's Allowance. Only one Fuel Allowance is paid per household.
What are the income limits?
For people aged 66 or over, the means test allows gross weekly income up to €534 for a single person or €1,068 for a couple, with the first €50,000 of capital or savings disregarded. Under-66s qualify through getting a relevant payment rather than a separate income limit, subject to that payment's own means test.
Is it backdated if I apply late?
No. The Fuel Allowance is not backdated if you apply after the heating season has started, so you'll lose out on the weeks before your application. That's why it's important to apply before or at the start of the season. Working Family Payment recipients, however, can now receive it automatically from January 2026.
Does renting a room affect it?
No. You can earn up to €14,000 a year — about €269 a week — from renting a room in your home under the rent-a-room scheme without it affecting your Fuel Allowance. The person renting the room doesn't need to qualify for Fuel Allowance themselves, so taking in a lodger won't cost you the payment.
