EU/EEA licences are never converted — third-country licences within 12 months.

🪪 Do I have to convert my foreign driving licence in Liechtenstein?

With conditions
Quick answer

It depends on the country of origin — an EU or EEA driving licence you need not convert in Liechtenstein at all. Because Liechtenstein belongs to the EEA, EU and EEA driving licences are recognised and need not be swapped, as long as the document is valid. This is exactly where Liechtenstein parts from Switzerland: anyone moving to Switzerland must convert even an EU licence within 12 months, whereas in Liechtenstein that is not required. The myth: 'I have to swap my EU licence within a year as in Switzerland.' Wrong — only someone holding a licence from a third country must convert it within 12 months of taking up residence at the Road Traffic Office, often with a control drive. Once the deadline passes, the old licence may no longer be used to drive.

📋 The rules

  • EU and EEA licences remain valid. As an EEA member Liechtenstein recognises driving licences from the EU and the EEA without conversion. You need not swap the licence as long as it is valid.
  • Third countries: 12 months. Anyone with a licence from a third country who takes up residence may drive on it for at most 12 months and must then have it converted. After that, driving on the old licence is not allowed.
  • A control drive is possible. When converting a third-country licence the Road Traffic Office requires, depending on the country, a control drive that checks driving competence.
  • The Road Traffic Office is responsible. The point of contact for conversion, control drive and licence matters is the Road Traffic Office (ASV); the rules are in the Traffic Admission Ordinance (VZV, LR 741.51).
  • Validity and papers. What is converted is a valid licence; needed are proof of residence, an eye test and a passport photo. A lapsed or withdrawn licence cannot simply be transferred.

🔓 Exceptions

  • Short stays and tourists. Anyone only temporarily in Liechtenstein who establishes no residence may drive on a valid foreign licence; the 12-month period begins only with taking up residence.
  • New categories. Even an EU/EEA licence must be converted if something changes — for example on acquiring a higher category or if the document is lost or expires.
  • Professional drivers. For chauffeurs and professional driving additional rules apply (chauffeur licensing); mere recognition of the private licence does not suffice for commercial passenger transport.

⚠️ Penalties & fines

Anyone who misses the 12-month deadline quickly drives without a valid entitlement — with serious consequences. After the deadline the third-country licence no longer counts in Liechtenstein; whoever keeps driving commits driving without a licence, which brings a fine and a report. It gets really expensive in an accident: without a valid driving entitlement the insurer can take recourse, and you help pay for personal-injury and property damage. Less obvious is the interplay with residence: anyone who thinks the old licence is enough also risks trouble at a check in the nearby neighbouring countries, where the Liechtenstein recognition does not automatically carry over. Anyone who fails a required control drive must repeat it and may not drive on the licence in question until then. And anyone who makes false statements at conversion or conceals a licence withdrawn abroad risks criminal proceedings.

❓ Frequently asked

Do I have to convert my German or Austrian driving licence?

No, as an EEA member Liechtenstein recognises driving licences from the EU and the EEA without conversion. You may drive on the valid licence and need only swap it when it expires or categories change.

How long may I drive on a third-country licence?

After taking up residence you may drive on the foreign licence for at most twelve months. After that you must have it converted at the Road Traffic Office, otherwise driving on the old licence is not allowed.

Is this the same as in Switzerland?

No, this is an important difference: in Switzerland you must convert even an EU licence within twelve months. As an EEA state Liechtenstein recognises EU and EEA licences permanently, without any swap being needed.

Do I need a control drive for the conversion?

For a licence from a third country the Road Traffic Office can, depending on the country of origin, require a control drive. For EU and EEA licences this does not apply, because they are recognised without conversion anyway.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

After the twelve months the third-country licence no longer counts, and whoever keeps driving commits driving without a licence. That leads to a fine and a report, and in an accident the insurer can take recourse.
