Am I entitled to paid parental leave in Liechtenstein?
Yes — since 1 January 2026 every employed parent is entitled to up to four months of parental leave, two of which are paid. This is new: before, Liechtenstein knew only unpaid parental leave. The employment-law basis is in the Civil Code (ABGB), the money in the Family Allowances and Income Replacement Act (FZEG, LR 836.0). The parental allowance replaces 100 % of the average AHV-liable wage of the last twelve months, but at most CHF 4'900 per month. It is open to whoever has worked more than six months without interruption for the same Liechtenstein employer. The myth: 'Like Switzerland, Liechtenstein has no paid parental leave.' Wrong — not since 2026: as an EEA state Liechtenstein has implemented the EU work-life-balance directive and gone further than Switzerland.
📋 The rules
- Four months, two paid: Each parent may take up to four months of parental leave; of these two months are paid as parental allowance, the other two remain unpaid. You do not have to take all four.
- 100 % of wages, capped: The parental allowance is 100 % of the average AHV-liable monthly wage of the last twelve months — but at most CHF 4'900 (twice the maximum monthly pension of CHF 2'450).
- Six months with the employer: There is only an entitlement for whoever has worked more than six months without interruption for the same Liechtenstein employer. It is taken flexibly — in full, part-time, in days or hours, if the employer agrees.
- Not transferable: The leave is neither wholly nor partly transferable to the other parent, and for multiple births the entitlement arises only once. Payment is made afterwards through the FAK.
- Tied to the child's age: Biological parents take the leave until the child's third birthday, adoptive and foster parents until the fifth. After that the entitlement lapses.
🔓 Exceptions
- No double benefit: Whoever is entitled to an equivalent foreign benefit receives no Liechtenstein parental allowance — decisive for cross-border commuters and international families.
- Transitional rule: For children born in 2023 (biological) or 2021 (adoptive/foster) the leave may still be taken until the end of 2026.
- Maternity and paternity separate: Alongside the parental leave there remain 20 weeks of maternity leave and, new, two weeks of paternity leave, both compensated at 80 % — that is not the same as the parental allowance.
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Parental leave is an entitlement, but whoever overlooks the rules is quickly left with a gap. Two of the four months are unpaid, and the parental allowance is capped at CHF 4'900 — higher earners therefore have only part replaced and must cover the rest themselves. Whoever does not meet the six-month period with the employer has no entitlement at all. Less obvious: although no AHV contributions are charged on the allowance, whoever draws an equivalent foreign benefit may not claim twice — otherwise the FAK reclaims the money and offsets it against future benefits. Wrongly received amounts must be repaid as well. And whoever fails to take the leave in time before the child's third (or fifth) birthday loses it without replacement.

❓ Frequently asked
How much parental leave do I get and how much of it is paid?
Each parent is entitled to up to four months of parental leave, two of which are paid through the parental allowance. The other two months remain unpaid, and you do not have to take all four months.
How high is the parental allowance in Liechtenstein?
The parental allowance replaces 100 percent of the average AHV-liable wage of the last twelve months before the birth. It is, however, capped at CHF 4'900 per month, so higher incomes are only partly covered by it.
Can I give my parental leave to my partner?
No, the parental leave is neither wholly nor partly transferable to the other parent. Each parent has their own separate entitlement, which lapses if it is left unused and cannot be passed on.
Is this regulated as in Switzerland?
No, Switzerland has no general paid parental leave, only maternity and paternity leave. As an EEA state Liechtenstein has implemented the EU work-life-balance directive and therefore has its own paid parental leave since 2026.
By when must I take the parental leave?
Biological parents can take the leave until the child's third birthday, adoptive and foster parents until the fifth birthday. Whoever misses this point loses the entitlement without any replacement, since no extension is possible.
