Can I geocache everywhere and go off-path?
No, you cannot geocache everywhere and certainly not just go off-path — in nature the rule is that you stay on the marked paths. In Flanders, the base rule (Forest/Nature Decree, access rules of the Agency for Nature and Forests) is that walkers use only the open paths in forests and reserves; going off-path (roaming) is allowed only in freely accessible zones or play zones, recognizable by official signs. Placing a cache follows the ANB/Natuurpunt code: without written permission a cache may be hidden up to 3 metres from the edge of an open path and up to 3 metres high (Natuurpunt requires the local division's permission anyway); further from the path = a risky activity that needs prior permission. In Wallonia (Forest Code) you must stay on the roads and paths open to the public — you may not leave the way, even on foot. In the breeding season or during works, signs can temporarily restrict access. Climbing caches, fishing caches and underground caches are forbidden.
📋 The rules
- Flanders: stay on the open paths; off-path only in freely accessible or play zones (signs)
- Placing a cache: max 3 m from an open path and 3 m high, with the manager's/Natuurpunt permission
- Wallonia (Forest Code): stay on the ways open to the public, even on foot
- Forbidden cache types: climbing, fishing and underground caches; no caches in nest boxes or burrows
- No fire, tents or disturbance of animals; take your litter home (cache max ~1 litre)
- In the breeding season or during works, signs can restrict access — always obey them
🔓 Exceptions
- In freely accessible zones (roaming nature, play zones) you may go off-path
- With the owner's/manager's written permission, a cache can be further from the path
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Going off-path where it is not allowed is an offence under nature or forest law. In Wallonia, the inspectorate draws up a report with a settlement of about €50 to €150. In Flanders, a warning or a fine from the Nature Inspectorate (GAS up to €500 for adults under the local regulation). Managers may remove non-compliant caches; if you damage nature, you also incur liability.

❓ Frequently asked
Can I go off-path in a forest?
In principle no. In Flanders you stay on the open paths, except in freely accessible or play zones with a sign. In Wallonia you may not leave the open ways, even on foot.
Can I hide my own cache in nature?
Only with the manager's permission. Under the ANB/Natuurpunt code, a cache may be within 3 metres of an open path and 3 metres high. Further away, or in sensitive zones, it is a risky activity that needs extra permission.
Which caches are forbidden?
Climbing caches, fishing caches and underground caches. Also caches in nest boxes, animal burrows or sensitive spots, as well as in dog off-leash zones, play zones or grazing zones.
What do I risk if I go off-path anyway?
A report from the nature inspectorate. In Wallonia the settlement is about €50 to €150; in Flanders a warning or GAS fine. Managers may also remove non-compliant caches.
