Can I let my dog off the leash?
Letting your dog off the leash is allowed, but not everywhere: on the public road and in nature a leash is often required, and it can run free only in a dog zone or on your own land. The municipal police regulation decides whether dogs must be leashed in public — in many municipalities they must, with a dog off-leash zone as the exception. In the nature reserves and forests of the Agency for Nature and Forests, your dog must always be leashed, except in a marked dog zone; in the breeding season this is strictly enforced. In your own fenced garden, your dog may of course be free. Note: as owner or keeper you are strictly liable for damage caused by your animal (art. 6.17 of the Civil Code), even if the dog escapes or makes someone fall. A well-trained, recalled dog therefore does not relieve you of that liability.

⚠️ Penalties & fines
A dog running free where it is not allowed brings a GAS fine or a fine under the nature regulation. In the reserves of the Agency for Nature and Forests, the immediate settlement is about €96, increased in the breeding season. If your dog causes damage or injury, you as owner bear the full compensation (art. 6.17 Civil Code), regardless of any fine.
