When do I need winter tyres in Czechia?
From 1 November to 31 March, whenever there is snow, ice or frost on the road — or the weather makes it likely. It's a conditional duty in the winter window, not a fixed date. Winter tyres must be on all four wheels with at least 4 mm of tread for passenger cars. On stretches marked with the "Zimní výbava" (winter equipment) sign, they are mandatory from November to March regardless of conditions. The on-the-spot fine is up to CZK 2,000 — the bigger risk is your insurer cutting the payout after a crash on summer tyres.
📋 The rules
- 1 Nov–31 Mar: winter tyres required with snow/ice/frost present or expected
- All four wheels, tread min. 4 mm (passenger cars)
- "Zimní výbava" sign = always mandatory in the period, any weather
- Tyre marking: M+S or the snowflake symbol (3PMSF)
- Winter tyres in summer aren't banned — but braking distances grow; insurers warn against it
🔓 Exceptions
- Dry roads with no snow/frost outlook: winter tyres not required outside signed sections
- Motorcycles are exempt from the winter tyre duty
⚠️ Penalties & fines
On-the-spot fine up to CZK 2,000, and police can stop you continuing. After a crash on wrong tyres your insurer can reduce or refuse the payout — usually far costlier than the fine.

❓ Frequently asked
Must I switch exactly on 1 November?
No — the duty applies 1 Nov–31 Mar only when snow, ice or frost is present or expected. In the mountains that means all winter in practice.
Is 3 mm of tread enough?
No — passenger cars need at least 4 mm on winter tyres.
What does the "Zimní výbava" sign mean?
On that stretch winter tyres are mandatory 1 Nov–31 Mar in all conditions — even dry.
May I drive on winter tyres in summer?
Not illegal, but braking distance grows and a crash can bring insurance disputes.
Do vans need them?
Yes — vehicles up to 3.5 t need 4 mm; trucks need 6 mm on driven axles.
