Can I park on the pavement?
No — unless a traffic sign expressly permits it. And here lies the commonest myth among Latvian drivers: leaving room for pedestrians changes nothing. Stopping and parking a motor vehicle on the pavement is prohibited. A car may be left on a pavement only where parking signs 529, 537 or 539 together with supplementary signs 830–839 permit it, and only in the exact arrangement shown on the sign. The exception covers two-wheelers alone: bicycles, e-scooters, mopeds and motorcycles without a sidecar may be left on the pavement where they do not obstruct pedestrians. The fine is €30.
📋 The rules
- Parking a car on the pavement is prohibited
- Permitted only with signs 529, 537, 539 plus a supplement
- It must be parked exactly as the supplementary sign shows
- Two-wheelers may, where they do not obstruct pedestrians
- The fine: €30
🔓 Exceptions
- Bicycles, e-scooters and motorcycles without a sidecar may be left on the pavement
- A car with a trailer may use such a space only with supplementary sign 830 or 831
- Even in a permitted area you must follow the exact layout shown on the sign
⚠️ Penalties & fines
The fine is €30, but the tow costs far more. Where the driver is absent and the car obstructs pedestrians or forces them out into the carriageway, the vehicle can be compulsorily removed. Then come the towing and pound charges, and you have no car until the procedure is resolved. And above all, drop the "1.5 metres" argument. Latvia has no general rule permitting a car onto a pavement merely because a certain width has been left for pedestrians. That exception belongs to two-wheelers, not to cars. A car needs a sign — not a gap.

❓ Frequently asked
Is it allowed if I leave room for pedestrians?
No. Latvia has no general rule permitting a car on the pavement merely because enough width has been left for pedestrians. That exception applies to two-wheelers, not to cars.
When is it permitted?
Only where parking signs 529, 537 or 539 together with supplementary signs 830–839 allow it. The car must also be positioned exactly in the arrangement shown on the supplementary sign.
What is the fine?
Thirty euros. The same amount can apply where the vehicle is parked contrary to the supplementary sign or road marking — so a sign nearby does not help if you are positioned differently.
Can the car be towed?
Yes. Where the driver is absent and the vehicle obstructs pedestrians or forces them into the carriageway, it can be compulsorily removed. The recovery costs fall on the driver.
Can I leave a motorcycle on the pavement?
Two-wheel mopeds and motorcycles without a sidecar, like bicycles and e-scooters, may be left on the pavement provided they do not obstruct pedestrian movement.
