🔋 Can I install a charging point for my electric car at home in the UK?

The short answer

A home charging point needs a safe installation and often a notification to the grid operator. Tenants and flat owners may need permission, and some countries give a right to install.

📜 The rules in the UK

Charging an electric car at home

If you rent a home or own a flat and have your own off-street parking space, the government's EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of buying and installing a charge point, up to £500. Get a quote from an OZEV-authorised installer, then apply online.

  • Eligible: flat owners (including shared ownership) and renters, not homeowners of houses. The parking space must be off-street, private and clearly defined, and your EV must be on the approved list. (gov.uk)
  • Since 30 June 2022 home charge points sold in Great Britain must be smart, with pre-set off-peak default charging hours that you can accept, remove or change. (gov.uk)

❓ Questions

Can my landlord refuse?

That depends on the rules in the UK. Where there is a right to install, a refusal usually needs a good reason.

Do I need a bigger connection?

Not always. The electrician and the grid operator can tell you.

Can I charge cheaper at night?

With a time-of-use or dynamic price, charging at off-peak hours can cost less. Ask your supplier.
