🩺 I depend on medical equipment or I am vulnerable: is there extra protection in Finland?

The short answer

People who rely on electrically powered medical equipment, older people and people on a low income often get extra protection. You usually have to register or tell your supplier and grid operator.

📜 The rules in Finland

Vulnerable and medical customers

Finland has no medical priority register and no social tariff; the protection sits in the disconnection rules and in social assistance. If a bill stayed unpaid because of serious illness, unemployment or another special reason mainly through no fault of your own, power may be cut at the earliest two months after the due date. A permanently inhabited home whose heating, or whose safety systems, depend on electricity cannot be cut for non-payment between the start of October and the end of April until four months after the due date, and no contract can take that away.

  • Before any cut you must get a written reminder, then at the earliest two weeks later a separate cut-off warning that explains your rights and points to ways to pay; the cut itself may come at the earliest five weeks after the due date. The seller may end the contract only once a cut has lasted at least a month. (finlex.fi)
  • Kela's basic social assistance pays necessary household electricity costs as a separate expense on top of the housing-cost limit, within guideline amounts (2025–2026: €45 a month for one person, €55 for two, €75 for four, up to €130 for ten; one step higher in detached and semi-detached houses), always plus the fixed network transfer fee. Heating costs, including electric heating, count as housing costs. (kela.fi)
