🔐 Someone used my digital ID or government login — who do I contact?

Direct answer

Your national digital identity (the login you use for tax, benefits, health) is the master key to everything, so treat misuse as an emergency. Block or reset it at GOV.UK One Login / Government Gateway — helpdesk (gov.uk) — every scheme has a helpline for exactly this. Then report to Police — 101 / report online (999 in an emergency) (101); the report number is needed to undo anything done in your name (a changed address, a benefit claim, a filed tax return). ICO — Information Commissioner's Office (0303 123 1113) handles the data-protection side and can order the agency to correct the records. Never share a login code with anyone who calls — no agency ever asks.

🗣️ What to say

"I believe my [digital ID scheme] was used by someone else on [date]: [what happened / what I noticed]. Please block it immediately, tell me what actions were taken with it, and how I get a new one. I will file a police report and need a reference from you."

🪜 Step by step

  1. Block itThrough the scheme's helpline or app. Then set it up again on a device you control, with a new PIN and two-factor.
  2. Check what was doneLog in to tax, benefits, health and the population register: address changes, new claims, filed returns, new bank details.
  3. Report to Police — 101 / report online (999 in an emergency)The report reverses fraudulent actions with each agency and protects you from their consequences.
  4. Undo each actionWrite to each agency with the report number: revert the change, cancel the claim, correct the return.
  5. Data protection: ICO — Information Commissioner's OfficeIf the agency is slow to correct, or if the misuse came from a leak, the authority can order and fine.

❓ Frequently asked

I gave the code to someone on the phone

That is how most cases start. Block the ID now; you are still the victim, and the agencies treat it as such. Report it.

Someone changed my registered address

Reverse it at the population register with the police report; an address change redirects mail and enables more fraud, so do it first.

Can I get a new ID?

Yes — the scheme reissues it after verification of your identity in person or via a bank.
