50,000 lekë a month since 1 January 2026 — gross, not net
Updated July 2026

💶 Can my employer pay me less than the minimum wage in Albania?

With conditions
Quick answer

No — not for a full month of full-time work. Since 1 January 2026 the national minimum wage is 50,000 lekë gross a month, or 287.3 lekë per hour on the official base of 174 hours a month. A private agreement to accept less does not remove the legal minimum. The myth: “50,000 lekë should land in my bank account”. No — the decision sets the minimum wage gross; what reaches your account is what remains after tax and social contributions. Mind the currency too: this wage is universally spoken of as “500 thousand lekë”, because people still count in old lek. It is the same money. For part-time work the monthly figure can be lower, but the hourly rate never falls below 287.3 lekë.

📋 The rules

  • The national minimum wage is 50,000 lekë gross a month as of 1 January 2026.
  • The official calculation uses 174 working hours a month and a minimum of 287.3 lekë per hour.
  • The minimum is gross: tax and contributions are deducted under the relevant rules, so the net amount in your account can be lower than 50,000 lekë.
  • The employer must declare the employee and the real wage; a private agreement for a wage below the minimum does not remove the legal minimum.
  • Breaching the wage provisions can be sanctioned by the labour inspectorate; depending on the article breached, the Labour Code provides a fine of up to 30 times the minimum wage — up to 1,500,000 lekë at today's minimum.

🔓 Exceptions

  • For part-time work the monthly pay can be below 50,000 lekë, but the hourly rate can never fall below 287.3 lekë.
  • For an incomplete month of work, total pay can be lower and is calculated in proportion to the time actually worked.
  • An employee's minimum wage is not the same thing as the contribution base of a self-employed person; the true nature of the relationship has to be established correctly.

⚠️ Penalties & fines

The employee can claim the unpaid difference and the correct contributions for the whole period, while the employer faces an administrative fine and an order to correct the declarations. Depending on the article breached, the Labour Code provides a fine of up to 30 times the minimum wage — today up to 1,500,000 lekë, a figure locals will repeat as “15 million lekë” in old lek. Paying part of the wage “in hand” is not a workaround: undeclared pay erodes the employee's future pension and benefits, not just this month's budget.

❓ Frequently asked

What is the minimum wage in 2026?

The national minimum wage is 50,000 lekë gross a month as of 1 January 2026, or 287.3 lekë per hour on a 174-hour base. In everyday speech you will hear it as “500 thousand lekë”, because Albanians quote old lek.

Should 50,000 lekë reach my bank account?

No. The decision sets the gross minimum wage, so the amount transferred to you is lower once tax and contributions are deducted. A net figure below 50,000 lekë is not automatically a breach.

What if I work part-time?

Your monthly pay can be below 50,000 lekë, because it is calculated on the hours you actually work. But the hourly rate can never drop below the minimum of 287.3 lekë.

Why do many pages still say 40,000 lekë?

That was the minimum wage before 1 January 2026 and many sources have not been updated. Government decision no. 776 of 19.12.2025 raised the monthly minimum to 50,000 lekë.

Does the contract I signed for a lower wage count?

Not for the part that falls below the legal minimum: a private agreement does not remove the minimum wage. The employer must declare the real wage and can be fined for failing to do so.
