💨 Can I vape e-cigarettes in Liechtenstein?

With conditions
Quick answer

Yes, but under the same limits as tobacco — and "e-cigarettes are unregulated" is out of date. Since 2 July 2026, buying and using e-cigarettes — with and without nicotine — is allowed only from 18; before that the limit was 16 (Art. 69(4) KJG). The myth: "Vaping is allowed where smoking is banned." Wrong — the Tobacco Prevention Act (TPG, LR 2008.027) pulls e-cigarettes into the same non-smoker protection: in rooms of the public domain, on public transport and in schools, vaping is off-limits too. The ordinance revision of 30 June 2026 additionally subordinated "similar products" — heated plant products, nicotine snuff, tobacco-free hookah. And because Liechtenstein sits at once in the EEA and in the customs union with Switzerland, cross-border delivery follows its own rules.

📋 The rules

  • Age 18 since 2 July 2026 (Art. 69(4) KJG): the consumption and possession of e-cigarettes are forbidden to young people until 18 — the reform raised the limit from 16 and thereby put e-cigarettes on a par with tobacco. The definitions follow the tobacco-prevention legislation.
  • With or without nicotine — no difference: for youth protection the KJG covers e-cigarettes regardless of nicotine content. Nicotine-free liquids also fall under the age limit of 18.
  • Handover ban and "functional unit" (Art. 69(1) and (8)): handing to minors is forbidden even where it is for a third party. The bans also cover objects that form a functional unit with an e-cigarette — devices, pods and accessories.
  • Vaping ban = smoking ban (TPG, LR 2008.027): in rooms of the public domain (public offices, club premises, schools and school grounds), in marquees and on public transport, vaping is prohibited just as smoking is.
  • Ordinance revision of 30 June 2026: the government subordinated "similar products" to the known categories and had the ALKVW regulate enforcement. Smoking rooms must be ventilated by 1 January 2028 so that no emissions reach non-smoking areas.

🔓 Exceptions

  • In private and outdoors: the TPG's non-smoker protection targets public and enclosed rooms. In your own home or in the open air it does not bite — though house rules, the tenancy agreement or your employer may still forbid vaping.
  • Single-room hospitality: as with tobacco, single-room venues may permit smoking and vaping under conditions; in multi-room venues it is allowed only in a structurally separated smoking room (see smoking in public).
  • Cross-border delivery: buying in the country follows Swiss law via the customs union. The physical delivery of e-liquids to EU countries, Norway or Iceland, by contrast, is restricted by the EEA Tobacco Products Ordinance — here the EEA overrides the customs union.

⚠️ Penalties & fines

For young people under 18 the same mechanism applies as with alcohol: no schedule of fines, but confiscation of the device and educational measures by the Office of Social Affairs, plus the police fee of CHF 150 when the Landespolizei intervenes. It gets serious for points of sale: enforcement of the Tobacco Prevention Act lies with the Office of Food Inspection and Veterinary Affairs (ALKVW), which since the ordinance revision of 30 June 2026 may expressly sanction breaches of the advertising and sponsorship ban effectively. We deliberately do not state the specific fine for a breach of the vaping ban — it could not be cleanly sourced from a primary text, and an invented figure is worse than an open gap. Anyone physically delivering e-liquids to EU countries, Norway or Iceland additionally breaches the EEA Tobacco Products Ordinance — with consequences in goods traffic that can go well beyond a fixed-penalty fine.

❓ Frequently asked

From what age can I buy e-cigarettes?

Since 2 July 2026 only from 18; before that the limit was 16. The new limit applies equally to e-cigarettes with and without nicotine, puts them on a par with tobacco, and extends to devices, pods and accessories that form a functional unit with an e-cigarette.

Can I vape in a restaurant or on the bus?

On public transport and in rooms of the public domain, vaping is prohibited just as smoking is. In hospitality the same single-room rule applies as for tobacco, and any pure smoking room must be structurally separated.

Do the same rules apply to nicotine-free e-cigarettes?

Yes, the KJG's youth protection covers e-cigarettes regardless of nicotine content. Nicotine-free liquids are subject to the age limit of 18 as well and to the vaping ban in the protected rooms.

Can I order e-liquids online from the EU?

Buying within the Switzerland-Liechtenstein customs union follows Swiss law, so purchase is possible there. Physical delivery to EU countries, Norway or Iceland, however, is restricted by the EEA Tobacco Products Ordinance.

Who checks that the rules are kept?

Enforcement of the Tobacco Prevention Act lies with the Office of Food Inspection and Veterinary Affairs (ALKVW). It may sanction advertising and sponsorship breaches, and the Office of Social Affairs may have test purchases carried out at points of sale.
