Am I allowed to grow and possess cannabis in Germany?
Yes, within tight limits. Under the Consumer Cannabis Act (KCanG), adults 18+ may keep up to 3 plants, carry 25 g in public and store up to 50 g at home — and your own harvest counts fully toward the 50 g. Consumption is banned within 100 m of schools, daycare centres and playgrounds, and in pedestrian zones between 07:00 and 20:00. Selling stays illegal — the only legal supply is your own grow or a licensed, non-commercial cultivation association (Cannabis Social Club).
📋 The rules
- Allowed from age 18 only — nothing for minors
- Home grow: max 3 plants per adult at a time
- In public: up to 25 g of dried cannabis
- At home: up to 50 g — your own harvest counts in full
- No consumption within 100 m of schools, daycare, playgrounds or sports grounds
- No consumption in pedestrian zones between 07:00 and 20:00
- Plants and stock must be locked away from children and teenagers
- Selling or passing to third parties stays a criminal offence
🔓 Exceptions
- Cultivation associations (Cannabis Social Clubs): licensed non-commercial clubs may grow collectively and hand out to members (max 25 g/day, 50 g/month; ages 18–21 limited to 30 g/month and 10% THC)
- Prescription medical cannabis has its own rules, separate from the KCanG
- Employers and landlords may restrict use on their property via house rules
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Over-limit: up to 30 g in public / 60 g at home is an administrative offence (fine); above that it is a crime. More than 3 plants, unsecured grow, or use in banned zones: fines up to €30,000. Passing to or supplying minors: prison possible. Driving: from 3.5 ng/ml THC a €500 fine, one-month ban and points.

❓ Frequently asked
How much cannabis can I keep at home?
Up to 50 g of dried cannabis per adult — and crucially your own harvest counts in full. Three plants quickly exceed 50 g, so the surplus must be destroyed or you risk a fine or prosecution.
Can I smoke cannabis in the street?
Generally yes, but not everywhere: it is banned within 100 m of schools, daycare, playgrounds and sports grounds, and in pedestrian zones between 07:00 and 20:00. Outside those zones, adult consumption in public is allowed.
Where can I legally get cannabis?
Only by growing your own (max 3 plants) or through a licensed cultivation association you are a member of. There is no open retail sale — Germany has no Dutch-style coffeeshops.
Can I drive after using cannabis?
Only once sober. A THC limit of 3.5 ng/ml in blood serum applies; above it you face a €500 fine, a one-month ban and two points. Stricter rules apply for novice drivers or when combined with alcohol.
Can under-18s possess cannabis?
No. Possession, use and growing are 18+. For minors, police and youth services are notified and a counselling or early-intervention programme may be ordered.
