Can I still use my old boiler in Czechia?
Not an old class 1 or 2 boiler — their operation has been banned since 1 September 2024. The ban hits old coal and wood central-heating boilers (typically pre-~2000 designs); class 3 and better remain legal, ideally ecodesign. Your class shows on the label, in the papers, or via the mandatory boiler inspection (every 3 years). Running a banned boiler risks a fine up to CZK 50,000 — municipalities check on complaints (chimney smoke is visible) and may demand the inspection report. Replacement subsidies run: boiler subsidies up to ~95 % for low-income households, New Green Savings for the rest. Stoves and fireplaces aren't covered — only central-heating boilers.
📋 The rules
- Since 1 Sep 2024: class 1 and 2 solid-fuel boilers banned

- Boiler inspection every 3 years mandatory — checks ask for the report
- Banned boiler: fine up to CZK 50,000
- Subsidies: boiler grants (low-income, ~95 %), NZÚ for others
🔓 Exceptions
- Local heaters (stoves, fireplaces) — outside the ban
- A proven replacement order or subsidy application: considered at checks
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Running a class 1/2 boiler: up to CZK 50,000 (extended-competence municipality). Missing inspection: up to CZK 20,000. Burning waste in the boiler: a separate, harsher offence.
