Can I own a firearm in Czechia?
Yes — Czechia remains one of Europe's most gun-friendly countries for law-abiding residents, under the new Firearms Act (90/2024) effective 1 January 2026. Physical permit cards are gone: everything lives in the Central Weapons Register. The old five groups became two authorisations — general (acquisition, possession, sport, hunting) and extended (concealed carry for self-defence). Existing holders converted automatically (A–C → general, D–E → extended). The substance stays: proficiency exam, medical certificate, clean criminal record and reliability, general authorisation from age 21 (lower ages for sport shooters/hunters). Air rifles up to 6.35 mm and low-energy rimfires are permit-free from 18.
📋 The rules
- From 1 Jan 2026: electronic authorisations in the register, no cards
- General: acquire/possess, sport, hunting; extended: concealed carry
- Conditions: age, exam, medical fitness, clean record, reliability
- Old permits converted automatically (A/B/C→general, D/E→extended)
- Category NO (air rifles ≤6.35 mm etc.): free from 18, no registration
🔓 Exceptions
- Sport-club shooters and hunters: exam access and authorisations from lower ages under special rules
- Museums and collectors: special (now electronic) licensing regime
⚠️ Penalties & fines
Possessing a licence-required firearm without authorisation: the crime of unlawful arming (up to 2 years, more for larger scale). Registry and transport violations: administrative fines.

❓ Frequently asked
Is my old permit still valid?
Authorisations converted automatically in the register (A–C → general, D–E → extended); the plastic card is now just a keepsake.
What do I need for a first gun?
The authorisation: proficiency exam, medical certificate, clean record/reliability — then purchase and electronic registration.
Can I carry concealed?
Only with the extended authorisation (the old group E) — general covers possession and transport, not carry.
How many guns may I own?
No numeric limit for common categories; over-capacity magazines and some modifications have special regimes.
From what age?
General authorisation from 21; reduced ages exist for sport shooters and hunters (15/16/18 depending on activity and supervision).
