Travelling outside the EU with a plan from Ireland: how do I avoid a huge roaming bill?
Roaming outside the EU can be much more expensive than within it, and costs vary by country. Check your provider's roaming costs or non-EU roaming packages before you travel, or switch data roaming off.
Outside the EU and EEA, roaming can be very expensive, especially mobile data. Protections such as a spending limit and warning messages exist in some places; what applies with a plan from Ireland is below.
📜 The rules in Ireland
The details
- Your data roaming limit is pre-set at €61.50 including VAT. You get alerts at 80% (€49.20) and at 100%; after that you must opt in to keep using data. A further alert comes at €123. (comreg.ie)
- If your provider cannot send the alert in the country you visit, you should be told so, and you remain responsible for the bill. The alerts cover data only, not calls or texts. (comreg.ie)
- In border areas your phone can connect to a network in another country without you noticing. In Northern Ireland you may pay cross-border roaming charges, depending on your provider's policy. (comreg.ie)
- A local SIM card bought at your destination means you pay local rates instead of roaming rates. Your phone must be unlocked to use it. (comreg.ie)
