How long can a phone or internet contract last in Ireland, and how do I end it?
A phone or broadband contract cannot commit you for more than 24 months. If a fixed-term contract renews automatically, you can then end it at any time with at most one month's notice, paying only for the service during that notice.
Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Ireland.

The details
- At least one month before an automatic renewal, the provider must tell you on a durable medium that your commitment is ending and how to cancel, and give you best tariff advice. (irishstatutebook.ie)
- You must also receive best tariff information at least once a year, based on your past usage, so you can see which plan suits you. (comreg.ie)
- Adding extra services or equipment from the same provider must not extend your original contract term unless you expressly agree when you sign up for them. (irishstatutebook.ie)
- Accepting an upgrade or adding a product can start a new contract with a new minimum term. This must be made clear to you and needs your consent. (comreg.ie)
