✈️ Travelling outside the EU with a plan from Austria: how do I avoid a huge roaming bill?

The short answer

Outside the EU, roaming is usually much more expensive. Two EU rules apply worldwide: a free information SMS when you arrive, and data-roaming cost limits that Austrian providers preset at 60 and 120 euros including VAT.

Outside the EU and EEA, roaming can be very expensive, especially mobile data. Protections such as a spending limit and warning messages exist in some places; what applies with a plan from Austria is below.

📜 The rules in Austria

The details

  • At 80 per cent of the 60-euro limit you get a message, and another when it is reached; data roaming is then blocked until the end of the billing period unless you explicitly agree to continue. (rtr.at)
  • You can lift the limit, but RTR advises against it. At the 120-euro limit the provider does not have to warn you at 80 per cent. (rtr.at)
  • Outside the EU you also pay for incoming calls, and a conditional diversion to your voicemail can cost twice, abroad and back to Austria. (rtr.at)
  • Near borders, for example to Switzerland, your phone can connect to a foreign network unnoticed. A roaming block for non-EU countries protects you while keeping cheap EU roaming. (rtr.at)
  • Since 1 January 2021 the United Kingdom counts as a third country: there is no 'Roam like at Home' there, but the information and cost-limit rules still protect you. (rtr.at)

❓ Questions

What happens when I reach the spending limit?

Where a limit applies, data stops or you are asked whether you want to continue. You decide whether to go on.

Do ships and planes count as abroad?

Networks on ships and planes often run via satellite, are not covered by the usual roaming rules and can be very expensive.

Can I dispute a huge roaming bill?

Yes. Complain to the operator first, then go to the dispute body if you cannot agree.
