How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Austria?
Switching internet provider is led by the new provider, and nobody may switch you without your explicit consent. Service may be interrupted for at most one working day, and the old contract ends automatically once the switch is complete (§ 118 TKG 2021).
Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Austria.

The details
- For consumers the notice period is one month and fixed cancellation dates are not allowed. Cancel in writing, keep the proof, and if unsure write: 'I cancel at the earliest possible date.' (rtr.at)
- Ending the old contract does not cancel what you agreed: the old provider may still bill open base fees up to the end of a minimum term and for the notice period. (rtr.at)
- In a bundle that includes internet or phone, ordering extra services or devices from the same provider may only extend your contract term if you explicitly agree (§ 136 TKG 2021). (ris.bka.gv.at)
- RTR certifies tariff comparison sites under § 134 TKG 2021; its tariff comparison page shows which ones are currently certified. (rtr.at)

❓ Questions
Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?
There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Austria on this page.
Can I switch before my contract ends?
Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.
Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?
That depends on the service and the rules in Austria. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
