Does my child need a car seat?
Yes. Children under 12 years and shorter than 150 cm must be secured in an approved restraint system (car seat or booster) in the car — § 21 StVO. The duty ends as soon as the child reaches one of the two limits: 12 years OR 150 cm. The seat must fit the child's size/weight and meet the ECE R44/04 or i-Size (R129) standard. With a rearward-facing baby seat a front passenger airbag must be deactivated.

Carrying a child without proper securing is an offence: usually €30 (child not properly secured) up to €60 and 1 point (child entirely unsecured); with several unsecured children up to €70 and 1 point. More important than the fine is the safety risk — an unsuitable or missing seat sharply raises the injury risk.
