My energy supplier is raising prices in Czechia. What can I do?
A supplier cannot raise your price overnight. It has to warn you in advance, and that notice often gives you the right to leave.
📜 The rules in Czechia
Price rises
Your supplier must inform you personally at least 30 days before changing its price (also when lowering it). If it raises the commercial part of the price or changes terms, you can terminate without penalty no later than the 10th day before the change. Changes in the ERÚ-regulated part are not a reason to terminate.
Switching supplier
Sign a contract with the new supplier; with a power of attorney it can handle the switch for you. It takes 1–3 months depending on notice periods (open-ended contracts: max. 3 months from the 1st of the next month). Since 1 Aug 2025 the penalty for leaving a fixed-price contract early is capped at 40% of what you would still have paid.
🪜 Step by step
- Read the letterNote the new price, the date it starts, and whether your contract has a fixed price until a certain date.
- Check if it is allowedA fixed price normally cannot be raised before its end date. Compare the notice you got with the rules for Czechia below.
- Compare and decideCheck whether another offer is cheaper. If you leave because of the increase, do it before the new price applies.
- Complain if the rules were brokenIf you were not informed properly, complain in writing to the supplier, then to the dispute body below.

❓ Questions
Can a fixed price be raised?
Normally not during the fixed period, unless your contract says so. Taxes and levies can still change.
Do I pay an exit fee if I leave after a price rise?
In many countries you can leave without a fee when the price goes up. The rules for Czechia are on this page.
What if I missed the letter?
Ask the supplier for a copy and the date it was sent. If they cannot show proper notice, complain.
