🗓️ Estimated bills and back-billing in Ireland: how far back can my supplier charge me?

The short answer

If your meter was not read for a long time, a large catch-up bill can follow. Many countries limit how far back a supplier may charge and set rules for meter readings.

📜 The rules in Ireland

Back-billing and estimated bills

No fixed back-billing time limit was found in CRU rules. ESB Networks reads meters four times a year and estimates twice; many estimated bills in a row can lead to a large catch-up bill. Send your own reading if an 'E' reading looks wrong.

  • Suppliers must bill you no later than one month after receiving scheduled meter data, and must contact you if a bill is delayed by more than one full billing period. (cru.ie)
  • If an estimated reading does not match your normal use, you may dispute it and should not be disconnected over it. (cru.ie)

❓ Questions

Do I have to pay a huge catch-up bill at once?

Ask for a payment plan. Many suppliers must offer one; the rules for Ireland are on this page.

Why did I get an estimated bill?

No reading was available. Send a real reading and ask for a corrected bill.

What if the meter was faulty?

Ask the grid operator to test it. Keep the test report for your complaint.
