I can’t pay my energy bill in Ireland. Can they cut me off?
A cut-off is the last step, not the first. There are rules on notice and protection, and help if your income is low.
📜 The rules in Ireland
Protection against cut-off
Suppliers must try to contact you at least 4 times and send a written notice at least 10 working days before disconnection, and offer payment plans (up to 18 months). Registered vulnerable customers get a winter ban; those dependent on powered medical equipment can never be cut off.
Help if money is tight
There is no social tariff, but welfare supports help: the Household Benefits Package electricity or gas allowance (mainly 70+) and Fuel Allowance for people on certain social welfare payments (or 66+). Apply through the Department of Social Protection.
