Can I change my legal gender in Sweden?
Yes — and it became significantly easier on 1 July 2025, when a new Gender Recognition Act replaced the 1972 law. From age 16 you can change your legal gender in the population register with a certificate from healthcare and an application to the National Board of Health and Welfare. The change is now fully decoupled from surgery, and no gender-dysphoria diagnosis is required — only a certificate of a lasting gender identity. For 16–17-year-olds the application is made by the guardians together with the child's written consent. Genital surgery is a separate matter, and removal of gonads still has an age limit of 23.
